Swim
Comments: This is the coldest water I've ever experienced! Colder than Tahoe or the ocean! It was really hard to keep your face down in the water. I had to interlace a few head up strokes into the breathing pattern until my face went numb. I started with an outside angle toward the first buoy. Had a strong start from the beach, but got caught up with the mass working an outward line at the buoy. Unfortunately, I couldn't break free for the rest of the swim. There was a lot of contact. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I really can't critique the swim, it was just too frickin' cold. Transition 1
Comments: Transition was good. There was a long run from the water to transition, so I had plenty of time to unzip, remove cap, hoodie, and goggles, then pull down the top of my suit while running. Little extra time spent to don a wind vest in transition due to adverse weather. Also, opted to put on shoes then run with bike since the transition filed immediately into singletrack. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Good transition. Bike
Comments: After a week of heavy rain, the course was practically underwater. Large mud bogs, puddles, and stream crossings. Unfortunately, it was very hard to guage the depth of the mud and water. While some were just shallow and wet, others would bury your hubs and bottom brackets. Had one bog suck up my whole front wheel and throw me over the bars. Overall, I think I fell three times on the course! What would you do differently?: Again, not much could be done with these adverse conditions. Course was slow and riding was difficult. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty fast transition. I had a little trouble here since my hands were numb. What would you do differently?: No. Run
Comments: My run volume has been down and it showed here. While the course was challenging, I should of been a lot faster. Not much more to say! What would you do differently?: Train more. Post race
Warm down: Just a little walk, then back to transition to pack up my stuff. What limited your ability to perform faster: Adverse conditions. Need to work on run. Now that I'm over injuries, I should be able to start building again. Event comments: TBF Racing puts on about 70 races a year. They have their act together. Good races at a reasonable price!
