Pre-race routine:

Had a banana and hard-boiled egg and coffee at 5:40. Went to transition early at 6:15. Got the end of my row next to the grass with the fire ant mound. Got everything ready. It was cold, cold, cold.
Event warmup:

Jogged for about 45 seconds. It was really cold. It was an hour after event start before my swim, so I hung out in the lobby of the Y and listened to other triathletes talk.
Swim
  • 08m 44s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was a blur to me. I just jumped in the water and started swimming until I was done. I did FS the whole way. My breathing was pretty good for no warmup. I was pretty relaxed. I let a few people pass and then a few passed on their own. I did not feel winded when I exited.
What would you do differently?:

Remember that it is a race and swim a little faster. Concentrate more on technique so I am more efficient and kick harder.
Transition 1
  • 03m 13s
Comments:

My first transition. Even though it was cold outside, I was warm after I dried my arms and legs. I took longer than I needed because I was trying to decide whether to add clothing.
What would you do differently?:

Be more organized.
Bike
  • 1h 04m 25s
  • 13.8 miles
  • 12.85 mile/hr
Comments:

I didn't really look at my Garmin. I concentrated on how I was feeling and tried to simulate my training. I felt like it was a pretty good ride for me. A few people passed me at the beginning, but at the end I passed a few too.
What would you do differently?:

I would remember that it is a race and concentrate a little more on faster speed.
Transition 2
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

My neighbor had put her bike in my spot. It was a bit of a struggle to move it and get mine racked.
What would you do differently?:

Just pick up the pace a little.
Run
  • 30m 58s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

I should have done some sprints on the run. I had too much energy left when I finished. I could have done a little better on time, but I didn't realize it until after it was over.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep doing my training.
Post race
Warm down:

I walked around and worked on clearing the fog from my brain.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not thinking about it being a race. Just need more training time.

Event comments:

Since this is my first one, I don't have anything to compare it too. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Things ran on time. Course was well marked.
