Swim
Comments: WOW, first open water swim. Thought I could use my wakeboarding wetsuit and it would get the job done... WRONG. Felt like I was wearing a sweatsuit, dragging through the water. Got a little panicked, then couldn't control my breathing at all. Did the first half on my back. Finally got calmed down and started giving myself little goals, 10 strokes freestyle, then back over. Finally get into a rhythm then my right calf locks up, huge cramp. After a bit hanging on to a kayak, finished the swim. The good... I swim straight (at least until I cramped and really couldn't kick anymore with that leg). What would you do differently?: Spend some time swimming open water. Should be easier as the weather is warming up now. Also, get a real tri wetsuit, or don't wear one. Transition 1
Comments: Flustered from poor swim, felt like I needed to make up for it and got a little out of myself. What would you do differently?: Need to stay calm and just go through my plan. Bike
Comments: Getting out of the park, people in front of me taking their time and not staying to right so I could pass. Good once on main roads. Definitely made an illegal pass... Some guy passed me on a hill because he was carrying more momentum, then pulled right in front of me, but must have been in the wrong gear, because he all but stopped, so I immediately passed him back without leaving the draft zone first. I actually had to pull to the left to avoid hitting him. Oh well, took off from that point and really picked up the pace. What would you do differently?: Have not been able to get on the bike as much as I wanted to, and it showed. Transition 2
Comments: Here is where the cramping started again. It looked like it was getting ready to rain, so I put socks on, and my legs did not like it. everything started with those pre cramp spasms. I'm getting faster here though, this one was much more efficient than the last one. What would you do differently?: Not much, this was a highlight for me, considering I added socks to the mix. Run
Comments: Total crampfest, by a mile in, both quads had said they have had enough and turned into knots. Tried to stretch them out, but then the hamstrings would try to lock up. I'd say I walked at least 1/3 of this course total. Very frustrating since running is my strong suit. What would you do differently?: The poor showing here was due to my poor nutrition and hydration plan. Got to fix that. Post race
Warm down: Couldn't do much, since I could hardly walk What limited your ability to perform faster: My preparation was not where it needed to be. Plain and simple. I took some things for granted and was not able to fight through some of the challenges I faced. Event comments: Lots of volunteers, and they were VERY encouraging, especially to someone who was having a miserable day. Last updated: 2011-03-29 12:00 AM
