Age Group Rank = 5/9
Pre-race routine:

Arose 6am. Had cereal then some yoga. Brought my bike to get transition area spot. Returned to camp and ate 2eggs, 2bacon, 2 wholegrain bread.
Packed up the campsite went to get my bib by 9:15m
Event warmup:

None. Unless you count trying to get a wetsuit on...
Swim
  • 14m 6s
  • 300 meters
  • 04m 42s / 100 meters
Comments:

Total Disaster. After great start I failed to remember to slow down. Quickly lost energy and struggled the rest of the swim. As well for the first time in 10 year history of this race the buoys shifted and the first 100m ended up being 150+m.
What would you do differently?:

Everything!
Notably: 1.) Train in open water - the weather has made open water swims impossible in my area so this was my first OW swim of the season.
2.) Remember I can't win the race with the swim - too fast for too long at the beginning of the race. Destroyed the rest of my race.
3.) NEVER do things that you haven't trained. I was seduced by the lure of a warmer body and rented a wet-suit. Trouble was I've never even worn a wet-suit in my life let alone swim in one. Felt like a couldn't get a good enough breath 'cause of the restricted feeling of the suit.
Transition 1
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

Still reeling from the disaster in the water I lost my balance while putting on my shoes.
What would you do differently?:

No socks.
Bike
  • 23m 34s
  • 10 kms
  • 25.46 km/hr
Comments:

Felt better on the bike. Pushed hard to try to make up some time and had a good feel.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Happy with the effort.
Transition 2
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

close to the fastest t2 for the entire race field.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 10m 21s
  • 2 kms
  • 05m 11s  min/km
Comments:

Within 25m I started to get a cramp at the bottom of my lats(mid back). My breath was deep right off the bat. Wished it was a long run as I started to feel good and pick up the pace halfway back in (1 1/2 k). Held my ground though with no one passing me.
What would you do differently?:

Push pace a little bit.
Post race
Warm down:

Light stretch

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Disastrous Swim
Bad Decisions

Event comments:

Was an excellent race. Some problems with the course. That swim buoy moving during the race was a bad thing. Some things that the organizers couldn't control, like road construction. Should be 5 stars next year.
