Swim
Comments: I was fairly loose, only a little physically nervous so I was pretty happy. What would you do differently?: Eaten more prerace and taken the time to get the goggles on better. The right one was leaking for the first half of the swim which was really bothering me. Transition 1
Comments: Took it easy, just wanted to make sure I didn't forget anything. I wasn't really caring how long it took. What would you do differently?: Bring a bucket to sit on. Bike
Comments: Nasty hills! I had to get off and walk the last part of two of the hills. I just didn't have low enough gears on my bike to make it up with my legs depleted the way they were. On my MTB I would have made it, but not on the road bike. Several short and nasty hills, several longer and thus just as nasty hills, some exciting downhills. I got up to 34.8 mph according to my computer. The ride just wiped me out to be honest. I was really feeling the lack of calories in my system. Next time I really need to eat more before the race. I ate two Hammer gels during the ride which were tough to digest without more water. And they weren't enough. Move into a liquid supplement. Next year I need to be much better prepared for the hills. Train for more hills next year!! What would you do differently?: Train for more hills. Transition 2
Comments: Took this even slower, think I should have taken even more time. Run
Comments: Walked most of the first mile because it was almost all uphill. I tried to jog the flats and downs but walk the ups, worked for most of the course. The legs were fried, it was getting hot, I hadn't trained on hills like that, I had nothing left, it was pretty frustrating to be honest but you reap what you sow. What would you do differently?: Train for more hills!! Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of correct training and inadequate pre race routine. I have come to decide that I was just flat not physically ready for this race, nothing more complicated than that. I had fun, learned a ton, and got a feeling for just how intense the physical and mental effort of a triathlon can be, and this was a little one! Next time I will be much better prepared on both fronts. Great learning experience! Event comments: Some aid stations on the bike course would have been great, like maybe having one. Post race seemed pretty tame, and not much going on at the finish. But this being my first race I don't have much to compare it too. And I didn't win the free bike.... 4:50am wake up. Eat half of pb&j, banana, piece of whole wheat bread with pb. Water as needed. Sipped Gatorade until race time, drank about 6-8oz 20 minutes prior to swim start. Had to wait 50 min for my start time, that sort of sucked.
Just sort of stood on the pool deck, socialized a little and swung my arms around to loosen up. Did not get in to swim, not many did. But I felt adequately loose for the start.
