Pre-race routine:

Hung out with some friends in a pool Saturday night until 9 PM or so, so I had to rush to pack stuff and load the bike in the car. I got to sleep around 10:30 and slept really well. We got up around 5 AM, I had a banana and some Powerade, then hit the road. We made it to the race site around 6 AM, did packet pickup, set up transition, and headed to the beach for the long wait until my wave was to go off (8th wave...)
Event warmup:

Swam 150 yards or so just to get loose.
Swim
  • 08m 27s
  • 547 yards
  • 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my first race and open water swim of the season, so all in all it was not a bad effort. I do feel like I had some trouble settling into a rhythm until the swim was almost over, and my breathing could have been better. But this was not too bad...
What would you do differently?:

Swim more the past few weeks, and maybe get in a couple open water swims before the race.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

This transition area is huge and there is a fairly long run up from the beach, but this was not a great transition for me. Everything just seemed to take forever.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions in the off season.
Bike
  • 40m 34s
  • 15.53 miles
  • 22.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Conditions were pretty ideal for the bike, there wasn't much wind, and though it was getting warm, it was still relatively cool. I pretty much just kept the hammer down and passed a bunch of people. Traffic didn't seem quite as bad as last year fortunately. I definitely faded a bit toward the end, but this was a solid effort for me.
What would you do differently?:

Bike more, just haven't been riding enough due to the cool wet spring we've been having and a busy few months at work.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Nothing to see here, just got in an out as fast as I could. For the size of the transition area, this was decent.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Run
  • 20m 52s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

I think my legs were not fully recovered from the marathon 3 weeks ago, they just really did not want to move fast today. I did what I could, but was disappointed to be a little slower than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure, think it was just a recovery thing...
Post race
Warm down:

Walked down to the lake and got in for a few minutes to cool off, stretched, had some pizza and beer, and waited for awards. Collected my piggy bank and headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Recovery from the marathon, 60+ hour work weeks, travel for work.

Event comments:

There's a reason I do this race every year, it continues to be one of the best in the area!
