Pre-race routine:

I was in California for a work conference, so looked for a race to do while I was out there. This one looked perfect.

I got to the race about an hour early - probably overkill but I had no idea how long it would take to get there with traffic. I had already picked up my packet the night before so really had nothing to do but sit in the car. About 10 till 8:00 I got out of the car and went to the restroom, then waited for the race to start.
Event warmup:

Did a few stretches but otherwise just shivered trying to stay warm.

Comments:

The events started 15-20 minutes late, which had me worried since I had an appointment for massage and facial at 12:45 p.m.... apparently there was a huge traffic backup in the park entrance and people had a hard time getting there in a timely manner. Yay for being early I guess.

The race started out on a nice packed gravel trail, but after about a mile turned to a paved trail. Really nice trail, I'm super jealous! As I ran I could see the fruit trees in people's backyards - again, jealous!

There was a good amount of non-race people enjoying the trail, cyclists, runners, dog walkers, etc. Around mile 3 a crazy woman on a road bike was insanely upset so many people were on the path. She was literally screaming at everyone to get out of her way, which made me laugh. I mean really lady... if you aren't happy with the people on "your" route, how about you choose another route, mmkay? She weaved in and out of people intentionally getting super close to them and yelling in their ear. I again laughed out loud and said something inappropriate as she passed. People be crazy.

Couple of things happened around mile 5. First I noticed I had suddenly slowed down to 11 minute miles. This disappointed me. I was giving the same effort, but going considerably slower. Second, my shoe was rubbing a nice raw spot on my left heel/achilles. Tried hard to ignore that.

After the turn around, I noticed that the mile markers were consistently OFF from my Garmin (whereas before they were literally spot on!) by about 7/10 mile. Every mile marker. Strange.

Started taking walk breaks around mile 8.

The other shoe started rubbing an identical raw spot on my right heel around mile 9 or 10. Yuck! I still can't figure out what happened here. The shoes are fairly new, but the same model I've run in for the past 6 years. Socks are the same. Maybe I am just not used to running these distances quite yet. Either way there was quite a bit of blood, gross.

I sped up in the last mile and finished pretty strong.
As I crossed the finish line the announced my name and that I'd come all the way from Wichita, Kansas to do this race - cool!
What would you do differently?:

Train. :)
Post race
Warm down:

I bee-lined directly to my car and left so I could make my spa appointment - which by the way was FANTASTIC. Sports massage (30min) on my legs and personalized facial (60min). After that I went wine tasting in the Santa Cruz area. The 3rd winery I hit happened to have live jazz music outside so I sat and enjoyed that for awhile.
Really a lovely day!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of real training.

Event comments:

This womens-only race is well run and has a great atmosphere. Really enjoyed the course and swag. Great stuff. The only thing I'd change is adding more drink stations - I think there were only 2 or 3, so with the course being an out and back you hit each of them 2x. Really wished I'd have brought my own water bottle. Also the events started 15-20min late, which is concerning if you were on a schedule or had something planned for immediately after.
