Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30 and down to parking at 5...wanted to give myself plenty of time since the Transition was at a different location than the swim start and the finish line was at a different location than both of these. So I had to figure out the best place for the car for getting stuff to the Transition and then not having to walk too long to get back to the car following the race...hopefully that sentence makes sense.
Event warmup:

Nothing after all of the walking back and forth to set up gear and then to the swim start I figured that I had 70.3 miles to warm up.
Swim
  • 27m 42s
  • 1960 meters
  • 01m 25s / 100 meters
Comments:

Good strong swim. I have been working on my swim for the past 9 months in prep for IMFL. I was using Augusta for a training run and the swim results made me feel like the training has been worth it. The only negative thing about the swim is that the water has a fair amount of weeds and crap in the water...not too bad unless you get it in your mouth!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 04m 10s
Comments:

Long run up from the water and around the back of the Transition area. On the way out it was a little congested at the mount line but nothing too bad.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...run faster
Bike
  • 2h 42m 25s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.69 mile/hr
Comments:

When into this to see how all of the bike training was going...decided to see if I could hold a strong pace and make up some time against the faster swimmers. The course is a relatively flat course with rollers and one hill that grind up for about a mile. Other than that it is a very fast ride with some nice descents. With the overcast sky it was a great ride overall.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

In from the bike and onto the rack...headed out the back of transition and back down the road heading out of the marina area and onto the main streets.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 55m 40s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

My main goal here was to hold pace and not stop. I ran through all of the rest stations etc. one b/c I started chocking on the water I was trying to drink! The sun had come out at this time and it got Hot but over all the course if flat and fast. I have always heard that the run course is littered with people that had a great "bike split" but then their legs gave out on them...true again. Tons of walkers especially on the second lap.
What would you do differently?:

Push pace if I had not been using this as a training race...no way I was going to hurt myself this close to IMFL.
Post race
Warm down:

Following the race I headed to the food tent, not to eat but to grab some fluids. I think it is a toss up between what was better the Coke or the Beer!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really

Event comments:

I would give the race a 5 but the way that the transition and swim start and finish line are all in different places it makes it tough if you do not have a friend or family member with you to help move cars etc. I know that this is the only way to make it worth and therefore is worth it for the quality of the race itself. Fast course, tons of great volunteers and lots of fun.

Course: River swim straight down the Savannah river. The current was not really much of one at all, as in the past we had to get into the water and hang onto the deck until the gun when off to avoid being sweep down the river. This time we go into the water and then waded off the dock by about 10 feet between two buoys until the gun wet off. Let me make sure I am clear there was a current (it is a river) but compared to the past it was a very slow rolling current.

Course: 2 Loops through downtown Augusta. Winding up and down the streets and past the finish line the first lap and into the shoot the second. Lots of people out to cheer you on. It is really a cool run route for spectators. The run downs up and down the main drag and gives people watching a chance to see their athletes multiple times and if they walk a block in either direction they could actually see the person again.
