Swim
Comments: Very rough water. I did an ocean swim earlier this year and that didn't even compare with the rough waters we were facing. The start was a mess too. I didn't want to get stuck at the back so I was near the front and it was cluster the entire way to the buoy. I couldn't get my rhythm down as I kept getting swam on. The swim north was a bit better as the field spread out but near the finish it got congested and I started to swim over the the slower people from earlier waves. What would you do differently?: Probably not start in the front, get to the outside and let the animals fight for their territory. I also ingested large amounts of water due to the waves. I'll try not to do that again. Transition 1
Comments: My bike was pretty close to the swim in so I didn't have very far to go. Wetsuit was easier to take off than the last. Was able to get socks and shoes on without many problems and left quite quickly. However when I got to the mount line I noticed my chain was off so I probably lost 20 seconds trying to get it back on. What would you do differently?: Be faster. I tried to get my heart rate down a bit so I didn't run as fast I as could've through transition Bike
Comments: Overall the bike felt great. I maintained my nutrition and did not feel like I was pushing hard but looking at my times I was flying through the course. I ended up passing a bunch of people and pretty much kept right down the course. The turnarounds were slow and really only allowed for 2 bikes at a time. The wind was a blessing and a curse since going north you were fighting a very strong head wind but heading back south it was all tailwind. I originally though I could hit 22mph but the last loop I couldn't sustain a fast enough pace against the wind. My garmin showed 21.6mph which I'm assuming is since I started it after I fixed my chain. What would you do differently?: I felt very good on the bike. I'm used to a lot of hills where I live so it was nice to have some flat terrain for a change. Transition 2
Comments: I think my time was slow due to the distance I had to run with the bike. What would you do differently?: Could've done better with running while putting my bib number. Not sure why it took 3 minutes. Run
Comments: While my pace was slow, I felt good on the run. I thought I could start cramping so I didn't want to push it much faster. There were plenty of aid stations so I was able to keep cool. I kept my pace and was able to do a pretty good sprint with about 1/2 mile to go. What would you do differently?: Keep running and training for speed. My runs coming into the event weren't good so I'm happy that I was able to pull the time that I did. Post race
Warm down: Had some water and post activity food and beer. The size of the event was humongous and we needed to get back on the road to get home for some commitments. Overall I didn't feel too terrible and was able to drive 2.5 hours home while my wife was passed out in the car (she did her first olympic) What limited your ability to perform faster: I probably could've pushed harder on any of the 3 events, but I don't know if doing so would've affected any of the other events. I felt pretty good through each leg and knew that I would be able to finish strong. The weather conditions permitted me from finishing under 2:45 but I'm still happy with the time. Event comments: The event is just too huge with lots of beginners. I think it was a good race for me but I will not be doing this again unless I live in the Chicago area. Transition opened at 4:15 and from talking with previous attendees, they recommended getting there early as the lines would be quite long if you were late. I'm glad we listened because as we were leaving, the line to get into transition was ever growing. What sucks about this event is that due to the sheer size, my wave was 49 which was the last wave to start, at 9:30. This was a full 5 hours after I was done in transition. Also because of this, we knew I'd be finishing after 12 which would put us in a tough spot for getting out of our hotel (and a proper shower) Luckily were were able to arrange somethings so it worked out, but having to wait 5 hours is a little extreme and not something I'd like to do again. Being away from transition just makes me feel uncomfortable as I think I may miss something. I had 2 bagels and some PB through out the morning and some gatorade with endurlytes. I went to the start at 7:30 to see my wife off. I was actually able to see her finish the swim before my wave even started.
Not much to warm up as there's no way to get into the water before the event. I guess you could call me fast walking back from the swim out a warmup. by 9:15 the sun's out and it's quite warm walking fast in a wet suit.
