Pre-race routine:

I did not know what to do with myself all day. I had to change hotels. Original plan was to take a red eye thru ORD to get to NOLA for the conference Monday morning. AA cancelled the flight and I had to take a 6 am flight on monday. The Hotel could not extend my reservation one more night so I stayed near the airport, which may have been a good thing. Got to Mandaley Bay around 3 and tried to find something for lunch. Got a crepe since that was the only manageable line. Not the best is in hindsight. Met up with Toniand we sat around waiting.
Event warmup:

None. Tried to go to the corral about 45 min before the race started. Total gridlock. Very unorganized. Could not make it to the right corral, had to climb over the barrier to get into a random corral after the race had started. Planned to run with the 2 hour pace group, but that did to happen.

Comments:

What a mess. Dodging people the entire way. People walking after less than half a mile. I ditched my ear warmers in less than a mile and gloves soon after. At about 3 miles I started to feel nauseous. A little after 5 miles I threw up and felt better until about a mile to go. Overall felt okay except for that. My heels hurt a little in the middle of the run, and right knee near the end. I managed to take 1/2 a honey stinger gel at about 8 miles. I was very glad I decided to carry water with me. Aid stations were understaffed. Mdrank at one of them. Finish line was another disaster area. Came to a complete halt right before and had to wait about 30 seconds to get to the timing mat.
Post race
Warm down:

Shuffled along with a million oth people. Managed to get a bottle of water and a blanket. I think thre was food, but could not get near it. Way too many people in way to small an area. After we got out of the secure area there were very few signs directing you. I could not find the meeting area, so I blew off meeting Up with Toni and Holley. Felt sick again and threw up again before getting my gear bag. Grabbed that and trekked to the taxi stand. Surprisingly short line and I was back at the hotel by 8:30. Took a long hot shower because I was freezing, teeth chattering.

Event comments:

Way disorganized. Expo was jam packed. Had to pick up my ticket for the pasta dinner there but the booth was hard to find. Space needed to be way bigger and more cashiers. Waited over half an hour to check out (Friday and Sat). The start of the race was horrible. Markers for the corrals were small so you could not tell which direction to head to. Getting in involved climbing over the barrier. The finish line area was way to packed. Could not get food because of the crowds. No signage letting you know where to go. Too few volunteers in all places.

Running the strip at night was fun, but the total chaos of the race really distracted from the fun. I've always heard how organized Rock and Roll events are. Mathis was not a good first impression. By disappointed. I heard that they ran out of medals, watrer on the course and even shirts at the check in. Hard to understand, they knew exacly how many people there were. I had planned to do this next year, but they say they will let in 60k then. If it was this big of a cluster with 44k runners, no way.
