Pre-race routine:

Woke up about 5:45. Drank coffee and ate a bagel with PB and a banana. Arrived at race about 7:00.
Event warmup:

Warmed up by swimming out to a bouy and back. Water was fairly calm for the ocean and cool.
Swim
  • 18m 7s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Came out in the upper third on this swim. It was a good, comfortable swim. No washing machine, noone crashing into me.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe I held back a little more than I should have, but overall I was pretty happy with the swim.
Transition 1
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

This was my first time with clipless pedals. I was nervous about running with the shoes on, afraid of slipping. Still don't have the hang of getting onto the bike quickly. Pretty much had to stop and fiddle around trying to get clipped in and swing my leg over without falling.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more getting onto the bike. I just bought the shoes a week ago. I did practice some the day before, but not that much with the transition.
Bike
  • 43m 41s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 17.07 mile/hr
Comments:

I tried to hold back a bit for the run, but I shouldn't have bothered because the run was awful anyway because of the heat. I drank at least one bottle while on the bike and poured at least another bottle over my head because of the heat.
What would you do differently?:

Forget about holding back for the run!
Transition 2
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

Spent a bit of time pouring a bottle of water over me because I was getting too hot. Then my shoes were soaked and I squished the whole time I ran!
Run
  • 42m 22s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 13m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

This run was HOT! I couldn't get cooled down. I would walk a bit and then attempt to run and feel like throwing up because of the heat. My legs felt great ... I was just too hot.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to keep from getting dehydrated. Maybe I need to drink a sports drink instead of water.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit trying to keep from throwing up. Eventually sat down for a while and then made my way back to the ocean to cool off more.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I got too overheated.

Event comments:

This was a fun, small race. I liked it better last year when I did it in April except that I had to wear a wetsuit and I didn't like that. Overall, I enjoyed the swim much more this year and the bike was awesome but it is way too hot in Florida to be running at 9:30 in the morning! I wish they had started at 7:00 instead of 8:00.
