Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:30 and had 1/2 a banana, a few bites of a Power Bar and a bottle of water. Took the subway downtown and caught a shuttle bus at Metro Center to the race start. There were a ton of buses and getting to and from the race site could not have been easier. A++ job on transportation for the race.
Event warmup:

At the race start I hit the porta johns before the lines got long. Sipped my water and took a light 1/4 mile run.

Comments:

What a beautiful day! The weather was awesome and the cherry blossoms were in peak. A perfect day for the first race of the season!

The goal I had been working on this winter was to break 8 minute miles at this race. I spent most of March sick, however, and my training seriously suffered. I decided to start this race with an 8 minute mile pace and see what happened.

After the first couple of miles, I knew that breaking 80 minutes was not going to happen for me. I settled in to an 8:30 mile pace.

I stopped on mile 7 for a quick bathroom break, something I had never done before. I swore that I would never do this, but my bladder offered me no choice. It cost me a couple of minutes.

Miles 8 & 9 hurt. I had never run at this pace this long before and my time started to slip. Mile 10 hurt too, but I knew that I was almost there and picked up the pace. During those 3 miles I cursed myself and questioned whether I should be racing this distance. 10 seconds after crossing the finish, I was ready to sign up for another race.

Post race
Warm down:

Light stretching. Ate two mystery muffins, two bottles of water, 1/2 banana, and a cup of gatorade. Walked around, talked to friends, checked out the cherry blossoms.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lost a lot of fitness over the past five weeks due to illness.

Event comments:

Very well run race. A ton of volunteers, great transportation options to the event, plenty of water on the course.
