Swim
Comments: one of my best swims. Found open water early, got out ahead of most of my wave and drafted and sighted really well. Found one guy starting to surge ahead of me to my left and cut across to attempt to draft off him. We stayed together until about the last 150 yards or so when he took off. That was fine for me. Getting out of the water I only saw two others from my wave ahead of me. Could have missed one... What would you do differently?: more Masters Swim classes and lots more intensity during training. #133/1362 Overall #1/25 Clydesdale Transition 1
Comments: not bad. location in transition has a lot to do with time here. really close to swim in makes you have to run really far with the bike. I much rather run from the swim in to the opposite side of transition than the other way around. What would you do differently?: Nothing. #65/1362 Overall #1/25 Clydesdale Bike
Comments: Rented ZIPPS again. My time last weekend in Stone harbor was a tad faster on the Mavics. This is where my race fell apart. Because not only did I push too hard but I also did not drink nearly enough. 90 degrees - in the sun for 30 minutes - what was i thinking? Well at least I had a good bike split right? What would you do differently?: Drink more. Maybe dump some water over my head while riding. Just overextended and good too hot and dehydrated. Continue with my bike fitness - need to find time to do lots of riding whether that is in the basement on the trainer or outside. #59/1362 Overall #4/25 Clydesdale Transition 2
Comments: This transition catergorizes as bad. Not because of anything else than I was SPENT. As soon as I crossed the transition mat in - I knew I was finished. What would you do differently?: #572/1362 Overall #3/25 Clydesdale Run
Comments: My goose was cooked. I ran from the Run Out until I got to the 1st water station. I was dizzy. I was sick to my stomach. The sun was beating down on me. It felt like I was in a furnace. I had nothing left. I spent it all on the bike. I pretty much walked the entire course. I seriously could not run for any more than 30 seconds without feeling like I was going to topple over. I have never, ever experienced this feeling before. I wanted to quit. What would you do differently?: Lose more weight so the heat & sun doesn't take its toll on me as much. Get stronger on the bike so I don't have to go all out and spend everything during the bike. Drink more on the bike. This was by far my worst run ever at any distance. #1238/1362 Overall #22/25 Clydesdale Post race
Warm down: Stand in the misting tent for what seemed like 10 minutes. Walked down to the lake and flopped in and just floated for 15 minutes. Felt so sick to my stomach I could hardly drink anything let alone eat something. What limited your ability to perform faster: (Weight)x(heat)x(sun)/(not hydrating enough)= disaster on the run If I even run - what below average for me in a 5K a 29 or 30 minute run - I probably finish in the Top 3 for the Clydesdale division. Looking at the splits I was the first Clyde out of the water, through T1. #2 Clyde into T2 and #3 out of T2 into the run - then got passed by 12 outhers in my group. Pathetic. My best Roy Halladay impression. Event comments: "A" race. Love it. Although I can't deal with the heat. I'm doing one of two things for next year. 1.) losing 30 pounds and racing at 185 or 2.) switching to the 35-39 year old Wave so I can get an earlier start. Kudos to Larry and Michelle and CGI on another tremendous event! Here's to many more... Last updated: 2011-04-18 12:00 AM

Running around crazy Friday night just so I could get my ZIPP rentals and then fly over to the park with my two boys to pick up my race packet. Example: I bought my dinner at 5PM and did not eat until 8:30PM. Tried to go to sleep at 9PM but woke up when the boys started crying around 10PM.
The alarm didn't go off - but I woke up at 4:55 AM anyway. Got dressed and jumped into the car. Was at Mercer COunty Park by 5:30 and was only the 4th person in line waiting to enter transition. Am I in bizarro world? 5:30AM and only 3 other waiting??? Anyway got marked, set up transition and went to stretch. I haven't been eating anything on race mornings except for a gel or gu 20 minutes before the start. I guess I have bought into Hammer Nutrition's findings regarding the way that muscle and liver glycogen is utilized. I was trying my best to stay hydrated. I had several frozen bottles of water with Nuun added to them. And another for my aero drink. I also took some Hammer Enduolytes, a gel, some Beta-Alanine and Hammer Anti-Fatigue caps about 30 minutes before the start.
My wave was the 2nd to last to go off so I had a TON of time to warmup. First I did some dynamic stretches and grabbed my bike to take a 15 minute ride to make sure everything was good to go. I decided to wait until about 8 AM to take my warmup run. I wanted my HR up by the time I go into the water. I finished my run around 8:15, found a toilet and walked down to the Swim Start a little after 8:20. Jumped into the WARM water and tried to get in about 500 yards of warmup. Felt good. Basically swam until it was time for my wave to enter the Swim Start Coral.
