Pre-race routine:

It was cold and snowy. 27 degrees and icy when i pulled in the parking lot at 8:10 am. The start was delayed from 9 am to 10:30 am. The cycling component was eleminated due to the icy roads. The run was rerouted to the track that was right next to the Community Center where the pool was located. The transition area was relocated to a gym inside the Community Center, so we swam in the pool, transitioned in the gym and ran out on the track. Since the cycling was cancelled, the run was increased to 3 miles or 12 laps around the track. Initially, the track was covered with ice, but by the time we started to run, it was no longer icy, just a little wet. We ran in the outside lanes: 6, 7, and 8.
Event warmup:

not much, just got in the pool and tested my goggles and did a very light swim. i had a PU enrgy gel about 45 minutes and 15 minutes before my start time although they pushed the start time back another half hour to 10:30 am.
Swim

  • 04m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

my clocked time in the pool 13:46. the woman behind me passed me on the first length so i pulled up and let her pass. probably lost a few seconds because of that. otherwise it was a decent swim. my 300 swim times this week ranged from 12:25 to 14:04
What would you do differently?:

keep swimming

  • 3 miles
  • 14m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

i was totally out of breath coming from the pool to the run. i had a slow consistent pace, but didn't have any juice to push it. it may have been up to the low 30s by run time. still had my wet shorts, hoodie, dyl's crochet hat, and my shoes without socks. i did get a little blister on my right outside ankle, but didn't notice it while running.
What would you do differently?:

keep training
Post race
Warm down:

stayed out on the track and cheer with Ariy-El, a 26 y.o. guy my size who finished 78th with a 42:16 time. he is the sports journalist in madison.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

missed 2.5 weeks of workouts in the past 3 weeks.

Event comments:

it would have been better to reschedule the race or run starting at noon so that the cycling could have been included.
