Pre-race routine:

I decided to do this race around 10PM on Saturday night. Not much time to prepare but it was a club race so I figured what the heck. Packed up what I needed plus some because of the weather and went to bed around midnight.

Event warmup:

Jumped in the pool, it was really warm. Swam a few laps and hung out talking to a couple of other club members.
Swim
  • 07m 21s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Never Ever sign up for a race late. When you sign on time or ealy you get seeded based on your time. The late signees get sent to the back of the line. I was the second in line behind the slowest swimmers. Behind me were 15 or so mixed level swimmers.
By the end of the first 25 Yards I was already caught up to the person in front. No big deal, turn around and prepare to pass then I get passed by the middle of the swim I was swimming under, around people and also getting swam over and around often running 4 and 5 wide down a lane. I had to stop at the end of each lane often waiting 10 or more seconds to cross over. Blah, it was frustrating but looking back kind of fun.

When I finially looked up ahead to sight and I see that I am clear for as far as I care to look I realized I was in the final lane...ughh.
What would you do differently?:

Sign up on time so that I can get seeded better.
Transition 1
  • 04m 51s
Comments:

It was really cold outside and I moved my T1 setup indoors to the hall just outside the pool. I took the time to fully dry off and put on dry clothes prior to leaving for the bike. It took forever to get ready but I was comfortable on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

nothing

Comments:

Not much to say here, have not put yankz on my new pair of running shoes yet so I spent a little time putting them on.
Run
  • 27m 25s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

My legs were frozen off the bike and I could not get them moving. Just felt like big lead weights swinging back and forth. Started feeling better after a mile or so and I was able to pick up the pace.
Mile 1: 9:17
Mile 2: 8:55
Mile 3: 8:46

Event comments:

Performance:
I was pushing 22MPH in the first 6 miles and thought, Wow I have picked up some serious speed. Must be all that Mountain Biking I have been doing lately. Then make a right turn and the first gust hits, 22MPH becomes 15 or so in a hurry. Cold front had come in that morning and brought with it high winds with 30MPH gust. Ughh. Wind about blew off my bike a couple of times and the last 10 miles were just brutal and all I could think of was getting off that bike. Looking at my Cadence I need to work on picking that up and spinning more in the smaller gears.
Wind: Strong with gusts
Course: Mostly flat with a few rollers. Very nice and will return at some point to ride again.
