Swim
Comments: This was an okay swim considering; I had sprained my left ankle a month ago, and my right ankle a week before this race. Everyone keeps telling me that swimming is good rehab, but it seems to be the sport that aggravates my ankle the most. Anyway, I tried not to kick much, which did keep me pretty slow, but I'm slow anyway. This was the first wave that I tried swimming with the group instead of about a quarter mile off to the side. But at one point I was passing someone doing breaststroke, but she saw me passing her and started flipping out and splashing, throwing water into my face and causing me to choke and cough...so I went back to my old standby of swimming way off to the side. Oh well What would you do differently?: Nothing, it went okay considering. Transition 1
Comments: My terrible transition time was mainly due to putting the ankle brace on, and my unwillingness to run in cycling cleats at risk of re-spraining either ankle. I did forget to turn my garmin on until maybe 3-4 miles into the ride. What would you do differently?: Remember to turn on my garmin Bike
Comments: I loved the bike; the only leg that I didn't feel like an invalid! But then again, I love cycling. I did get passed more than I hoped, and it took me a while to get into my stride, but overall I'm happy with it. The volunteers were a hoot; especially with the water drop zones. I missed despite my best try though :( What would you do differently?: I would have tried to drink more water. Transition 2
Comments: I had to get my other ankle brace on in preparation for the run, so it did take a bit longer than normal. Luckily this was my better healed ankle, and I was only using the brace as a precaution, so it didn't take nearly as long. Run
Comments: I started this whole race thinking I'd just walk the run portion, but I was feeling okay and the idea of taking 45min - hour before I could call it quits just made me want to cry, so I decided to try running it slowly, and stop when it hurt. I was able to run the whole thing (albeit slowly; had to watch for every rock just in case), with just a bit of aching in my right ankle, which was awesome. It didn't even swell at the end, which I'm thankful for. The Ace Braces did start getting really hot and annoying, but it was such a short run that it wasn't a huge deal. I did much better than I thought I would at this portion, so I can't complain. Post race
Warm down: Ice!!! What limited your ability to perform faster: My gimpy ankles... Event comments: I know, I probably shouldn't have even tried doing this race, but I never claimed to be the brightest crayon in the box. Thankfully it all turned out okay. Last updated: 2011-04-22 12:00 AM
