Swim
Comments: I was in wave 7 - last of the Olympic waves. There were 24 waves altogether, the rest being sprint and team. I let the wave go, counted to 5, then followed. Shortly after I started my swim, my goggles came apart. I panicked but then calmed down and got them back together again. I just swam slow and steady and didn't have a problem with the distance. I thought I might have been last out of the water but there were still bikes when I got to transition. What would you do differently?: I don't think I'll ever be a faster swimmer Transition 1
Comments: Very long exit to transition and then had to go through sprint transition area - but my transitions are always bad What would you do differently?: Some day I'll work on making transitions faster Bike
Comments: I was uncomfortable on the 1st highway stretch. I'm pretty slow but ended up behind even slower sprint bikers and found it hard to pass with so many bikers and traffic. Slower bikers ahead and the fast bikers starting their 2nd loop on the outside. After that, course was fine. On the second loop I was all alone with a couple bikers a 1/4 mile ahead and a couple a 1/4 mile back. When I was coming up to the last intersection before the park, the officer stopped a ton of traffic ahead of time and I just sailed through - I yelled to him that I felt like a VIP. What would you do differently?: Didn't get much outside riding because of late spring. Don't have enough hills around here. This is where I could make the most improvement if I put in more time. Transition 2
Comments: See T1 Run
Comments: Another Roctane and water in T2. Temp was quite hot by now and no shade on the run. Splits look weird because of hill in the middle. Slowed down and walked some at end. What would you do differently?: Actually, happy with the run - it was my best leg. Post race
Warm down: When I crossed the finish line, I saw my husband taking my picture. I was really surprised - I didn't know he was going to drive down. I had finished shortly after the awards ceremony started so I wasn't on the age group winner list - but I went up to the stage later and got my prize and my picture taken for the website. Went to Iven's on the Bay for post-race dinner - it's becoming a tradition - didn't have 2 desserts this time because I had stocked up on a bunch of Starbucks mini-desserts for later What limited your ability to perform faster: Need to bike more and then work on transitions. Event comments: Cannot say enough about the volunteers. Even though I was way back-of-the- pack, those yellow shirts were always ringing their bells and shouting encouragement when I went by on the bike. And on the swim, a couple of times I stopped because I thought they were yelling something at me but they were shouting encouragement. And on the run, when I stopped to walk, they got on my case - haha Last updated: 2011-04-22 12:00 AM

This was my 1st Olympic.
Drove down the night before and stayed at Super 8 because I really wanted to drive the bike and run course. Picked up packet. Checked out the lake and it was a little windy and choppy but I knew the forecast for the next day was calm.
Got to race early and got a great residential parking space just a block from the park gate. Racks were age assigned. I racked in the back because I knew everyone else would be faster than me and a few extra seconds sure isn't going to make any difference in my time. Ran into Rick Hans who I see at the Y lap pool sometimes (he ended up 3rd in his age group - very happy for him) Found a couple of other friends. A couple of trips to porta-potty - lines very long, of course.
Got in water to acclimate but wouldn't have needed to - didn't really feel cold. GU Roctane and water just before race start.
