Pre-race routine:

Woke to coffee and bagels, shower, shave, dress, yada yada. Let Angel and the boys sleep a little longer than usual, as a result had a little traffic and more difficulty parking. Caught the shuttle from City Park to the French Quarter, hit the porta potti line. Forty-five minutes later, left the porta-potty to head for the corral.
Event warmup:

Jogged a few blocks, then they opened up the street to line up for the start. Started about thirty yards from the start line.

Comments:

From the start pace was as fast as the crowd would let me, started out about 9m/m, steadily increased to about 8, 8:10 as we advanced up Poydras Street, felt comfortably hard. Turned on to Rampart, and soon we were baking in the hot sun with no breeze to speak of. Was nearly fried by mile 2, most definitely had to alter the pace. Down to 9m/m for mile 3, then started walking the waterstops, By the end of mile 5 I was in survivor mode.

What would you do differently?:

Pace more for weather conditions than an optimized goal.
Post race
Warm down:

Waited for the boys, then we went into the party area. Walked around, ate and drank, listened to the band and waited for Angel. When she was done we headed for the car and home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat, and too fast a pace from the start. Could probably run ~8:15/mile if temps were in the 40s, but not today with it in the 80s.

Event comments:

Definitely the "classic" New Orleans road race and a family tradition.
