Swim
Comments: It was actually much cleaner/clearer than the Chesapeake Bay (at least, where the swim was). It felt like it took a while to get through the starting buoys once the foghorn (or whatever it was) sounded. I was definitely a lot slower than I thought I'd be, had a hard time getting focused (not being able to even see the 1st buoy b/c of the bridge pilings didn't help, nor did seeing the majority of women in my wave increasing the distance between me & them). The swim felt interminable and I was glad when it was over, though I normally enjoy my swims, even the OWS in the Chesapeake. What would you do differently?: I need to figure out how to go faster - maybe increasing strokes? I also wouldn't swim the day before, even though it was only 20 min, it was almost race distance and I think that had an impact. Transition 1
Comments: I know my T1 was long, but I'd planned to not worry about my T time since I just wanted to enjoy the experience, knew I wasn't racing for rank & wanted to make sure that I stretched enough between events to help out the tendinitis in my knee cap (doctor stressed the importance of stretching front & back of leg equally to help w/ it). I was also pretty shaky coming out of the swim, which I hadn't expected but probably because it took me so much longer than I thought it would. I was glad for the water bottle to squirt the sand & grass off my feet before drying them off. What would you do differently?: Not sure, but I hope that I feel better coming out of my swim the next time & don't feel the need to settle myself & gain focus - I hope I can do that as I start (or before starting) the swim. Bike
Comments: It was quite scenic & I was proud of myself for being able to hydrate while on the bike (that was a pleasant & unexpected surprise to be able to pull it off w/o losing a water bottle or slowing down ridiculously). Looking back, I'm somewhat surprised that this was probably my favorite part of the race, even though my hands went numb at the beginning & I had all sorts of issues with my shorts pinching & rubbing - and trying to adjust once on the bike is pretty much a non-starter. What would you do differently?: I forgot that I'd moved part of my bike computer & forgot to move it close to the piece on the wheel, so I wasn't able to tell how far into the course I was, nor was I able to track MY distance (vs. the advertised distance of the course). So I would make sure my bike computer was ready to go. I would also make sure my shorts (or whatever) don't cause me problems coming out of the swim (they tend to get dragged down/out of place by the swim). Try to relax my upper body more since my hands went numb rather quickly & it took me a while to loosen up enough to regain feeling in them. Transition 2
Comments: Again with the stretching & trying to hydrate. Put the race belt on & had a piece of bagel as I ran out & was thankful for the Gatorade on my way out of transition. What would you do differently?: have more water with me & drink that instead of G2. Run
Comments: The run started on the grass, which I hated and I had a hard time getting my knee to cooperate, so I limped/ran through the 1st .25 miles or so. I just wasn't motivated enough to pull it together to really push on the run; I ran the last 1/3 mile or so after alternating walking & running (slowly, at that) most of the way. What would you do differently?: build up my endurance & overall fitness so that I would push it on the run to finish strong, not just finish to be done with it. Maybe get a water bottle to carry with me on the run to NOT drink so much gatorade Post race
Warm down: walking around with daughter & husband What limited your ability to perform faster: needed to do more endurance training; patellar tendinitis Notes to self: I need to work on core, endurance & nutrition (my body hated me the rest of the day for consuming so much G2 & Gatorade when I hadn't done so before). Event comments: Not sure I will ever do a large city with a toddler again (not the race's fault, but it definitely was much more difficult than anticipated). Last updated: 2011-04-26 12:00 AM

Up & down the elevator at the hotel w/ my bike & bag 3 times for things I kept forgetting... ticket to get out of the parking lot, extra contacts... Tried to be as quiet as possible so as not to wake my 16 month old in our hotel room. PB on a bagel, some G2, OJ & water (not all together) throughout the morning pre-race.
ran 1/4-1/3 mile, did the warmup swim - I was glad I did it, but since I swam the day before, I'm not sure if it was a great idea to do both since I felt tired earlier than I thought I would (based on training) during the swim.
