Overall Rank = 65/304
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 17/32
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5 and ate yogurt mixed with banana, peach, dried cranberries and granola. Got to the race early and set up. Too early. I ended up standing around and walking around killing time. Next time come 15-20 minutes later.
Event warmup:

Swam a few laps in the pool to warm up and get acclimated to the water temp. The warm-up was futile as I'll explain later.
Swim
  • 08m 15s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

The water was very warm, like bathwater. Because of the heat, I gave myself some extra time to get the swim done. It took about 45 min from the start time to the time that I actually got in the pool so I was not warmed up anymore from my warm-up routine. My best time trial was 9:04, so I put myself in the 9:45 group. This was a big mistake. Several people ahead of me were breast stroking and/or walking. I passed about 6 people on the swim portion and ended up finishing in 8:15. Luckily I timed myself because the race combined the swim time with T1 time.
What would you do differently?:

I had no idea I would swim that fast because of my time trials. But I guess now I know. I would line myself up with the 8 min group.
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Good quick transition. The transition area was in a parking lot and it was difficult to run in my bike shoes. I need to learn the running mount and dismount.
Bike
  • 43m 20s
  • 12.3 miles
  • 17.03 mile/hr
Comments:

Legs felt like jelly on the hills. This was a very hilly course.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more hills.
Transition 2
  • 00m 47s
Run
  • 27m 1s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

By the time I got on the course, it was HOT! As hot and hilly as it was, I was satisfied with my pace. I focused on keeping my heart rate in check on the up hill areas and speeding up on the downs.
Post race
Warm down:

Water and fruit

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat.

Event comments:

This is a great beginner race. This wasn't a closed bike course but there were plenty of volunteers helping to direct traffic. They did a great job. I didn't have to stop once for traffic. The pool water was dangerously warm. I would recommend moving this one to the spring or the fall.
