Pre-race routine:

Got up, gathered my bag packed from the night before. Ate a bowl of rice, some fruit, drank Accelerade and left the house.
Event warmup:

A wreck at the exit ramp delayed me by almost 40 minutes! Both parties involved in the wreck were runners. I got a parking spot, tossed my stuff together and sprinted to the start line. For some stupid reason at the last second decided not to take my fuel belt :(

Comments:

Run was very fun. I started the race 5 minutes after everyone else had cleared the starting line due to the wreck. I was mildly gassed since I had sprinted there. I got into a rythm I started making my way pass the walkers, the baby joggers, the people that were determined to run it but were real slow, etc. I continually passed everyone around me (slow crowd because I'm no speed demon) until the 10k mark. Thats when my tummy started growling and I ran out of gas. I wasn't winded at all but I just needed more fuel. Tried my best to tank up on powerade at the stations but at 11.5 miles I went bonk. Had to walk a good portion of it from that point on but I ran hard for the last half mile. Was a very good learning experience.
What would you do differently?:

Bring my fuel belt with Accelerade and some real food. This is the farthest distance I've attempted to run (and I ran it solid for over 9 miles) and it showed me that I'm one of those people that just has to eat during the event. I'll definately bring some easy snacks next time. I have been over being sick for about a week now and feel great, but not running for the last two weeks hurt me bad. Of course I'd change that if I could ;)
Post race
Warm down:

Got my chip cut off and went straight for some water and stretching. After marvelling at the flexibility a 13.1mi event bestows upon oneself I proceeded to stick around and wait for the first Marathoner. He was some white dude from Flowermound and came in around 2:50. Imagine that, someone besides a Kenyan won! Though I didn't see too many Kenyans either...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I would have liked to have not been rushed at the beginning, but the effect on me was probably negligible. The biggest factor easily was not having run for 2 weeks. Also of note was that I never got gassed or was in much pain, I just didn't have any fuel at the end. Some food or better drinkage maybe would have helped.

Event comments:

Race was well done and organized. Started right on time unfortunately :(

Course: Course was very hilly and many of the roads were pretty beat up. I won't say crappy, but beaten up. The runners were generally shaded by trees, houses, whatever, but the sun was out for sure by the end of the race. Did I mention there were hills?
