Age Group Rank = 5/14
Pre-race routine:

Woke up a couple hours early and had a fig cereal bar and a cup of coffee.
Event warmup:

Short warmup of a hundred yards or so in the lake.
Swim
  • 13m 56s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt pretty rough going out again. I'm not sure if it's race-day nerves or swimming first thing in the morning. Settled in after the first couple hundred and finished fairly well.

Swim results include the run from the water up to transition which, for me, was probably around 45 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Try some early morning swims to see if that's a factor. Do a much longer warmup.
Transition 1
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Transition went fairly well. Rather than put on my computer, I held it for the first bit and then stashed it in my bento box.
What would you do differently?:

Start with the computer in the bento box or ditch it completely for sprint races.
Bike
  • 30m 2s
  • 10 miles
  • 19.98 mile/hr
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

Second transition was pretty fast. I did stop for a second to squirt some water from my bottle on my head as it was getting pretty hot.
Run
  • 25m 37s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

I just restarted running short distances a couple weeks ago due to a knee injury. Given the lack of run training, I'm happy with the results.
What would you do differently?:

Come into the race healthier with a better running base.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and then stood in the lake for a few minutes to cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat and humidity, particularly on the run, were rough. Other than that, just training limitations.

Event comments:

This is a fun local race with a good vibe. There were some organization difficulties but that's to be expected since it's the first year for the race. I'd like to see some aid stations, mile markers, and better course measurements next year. That said, it was a fun race and I'd do it again. I hope the organizers bring it back for 2011.

Course: Triangular, clockwise course in Gull Lake. Several participants indicated the course was long which seems likely. The buoys were pulled out and place an hour before the race. The fastest overall swimmer had a pace over 2:02 per 100 according to the race results. The same swimmer in a similar race this year averaged 1:28.

Course: Out and back course with a few rollers on the early part of the course. A one mile section of the course had been chip sealed two days earlier which forced slowdowns on a couple curves. The organizers found out before they did the other side of the road so there was less chip seal on the return lane.

Course: Relatively flat out and back course through KBS. The course was marked but not wonderfully. Three of the race leaders actually took a wrong turn and ran an extra half mile or so. There were no water stations one the run which was bad given the heat, humidity, and sun.
