Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30. Out the door by 5:15. Had oatmeal and some water.
Event warmup:

Nothing. Set up transition, walked around getting oriented to transition and swim course.
Swim
  • 32m 53s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt strong in the water. My stroke and breathing was good. I've the done the Sprint race they have here in August and I always have a problem with navigation here. I got off course a few times, nothing major but still had to course correct. I almost got my leg tangled on one of the bouys. That slowed me down a little bit. Overall, I felt great about the swim. I was disappointed at the swim exit when I saw my time. I was shooting for 27 mins and felt confident I hit it. However, my watch said 32 minutes. I've read some of the other race reports from other athletes and they indicated their swim time was slower then expected too. Not sure if they changed something on the swim course.
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing sighting. Get better at cutting the bouys. Overall I'm happy with the swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

Felt good during T1. I'm not used to getting out of the wetsuit - that slowed me down a little.
What would you do differently?:

Put some Body Glide on the back of my neck. My wetsuit chaffed the back of my neck. Need to practice getting out of the wetsuit.
Bike
  • 1h 18m 40s
  • 25 miles
  • 19.07 mile/hr
Comments:

This continues to be my weakest leg of the race. I felt good up until mile 18. Mile 18 - 25 felt like forever. I need to spend more training time here.
What would you do differently?:

I need to focus more on the bike during training this season. I've talked about getting a coach to help me but I have yet to do it. Need to get on this. I rented Zipp wheels for the race. They helped a lot. I know I can get a lot faster. Just need to spend the time in training.
Transition 2
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

Legs felt like jelly getting off the bike. Did not run thru T2. Had to walk. I was hoping to get thru T2 in 1:30.
What would you do differently?:

I need to be able to run thru T2 to save time. I think spending more training on the bike will help with my legs getting stronger and recovering faster after I get off the bike.
Run
  • 47m 9s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

It took me some time to get my legs under me. After the first mile I started to feel good. However, there were several long, gradual hills. They were deceptively hard - had a compounding effect thru the race. Felt more fatigued then usual on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Increase my traning volume/intensity. I've never tried using an energy gel during the race. Will try that next time.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing much. Walked around drinking water, eating bananas.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This is my first Olympic distance tri. Overall, I'm happy with my performace. I do need to spend more time training on the bike. I have spent a lot of time on the swim and run. Need to focus more on the bike. This is where I can pick up the most time.

Event comments:

Great race. It's very well organzied. Plently of signage and voluteers. I will do this race again.
