Pre-race routine:

Got to the race early with Matt and Brian. I set up tranistion then went for about a 1 mile warm-up run. Ended up nice becuase I found a bathroom that was empty.
After that I went down to the water for a quick 200-300 yard swim.
Swim
  • 17m 53s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started off right behind Funderburke. I thought that if I could start behind him and stay with him for about 100 yards without dying then I should have pretty clean water. It worked pretty good as the battling wasn't too bad. I felt pretty good but not great. After the first turn I was able to really reach and lengthen my stroke which helped a ton. I kept playing leap frog with this one guy and after the third time I decided to just stay on his feet and let him do the work. After the last turn I pulled out in front of him but he must have grabbed my feet because we came out of the water together. When I came into transition I knew I must have had a decent swim becuase there weren't many bikes missing at all. The did say that the swim was a little long but I don't know by how much. I did feel much better than the average shows but who knows.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. My plan worked pretty good and I shaved almost 2 minutes off the swim from last year.
Transition 1
  • 02m 9s
Comments:

I was on the first rack so my transition ended up being a mud pit but whatever.
Bike
  • 48m 9s
  • 18.2 miles
  • 22.68 mile/hr
Comments:

I had been having some leg issues over this last week and stayed off the bike just becuase of that. I hit it pretty hard when we came out of the park and could feel the same spots and feeling I had been feeling. I ended up jumping my cadence up to 100 to take the load off of my legs which worked out great because the pain went away but the speed was still there. I didn't get passed by a single person today. Usually the younger waves will start to catch me back by the damn but not today.
What would you do differently?:

I don't think I would do much different as this is my best bike split at this race ever.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Run
  • 24m 42s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

I started out a little slower than I have over the last couple of races because I was dying towards the end of the run. I think this was a good strategy to start but I let myself settle into that slower pace and then I didn't want to push to get faster. I ended up running the entire run at a pretty steady effort. I think I could have pushed myself a little more here but for the amount of time I have spent running lately I can't be too unhappy.
What would you do differently?:

I would train more for my runs and I think I could have pushed a little harder.
Post race
Event comments:

Overall I am very happy with this race as I beat my last years race time by almost 4 minutes. I felt really strong most of the day and ended up doing much better than I thought I would especially at this race which always has much steaper competition than the other local races.
