Swim
Comments: I think I seeded myself too low, but was honest. I passed 2 people in the first 150 yards and then got stuck behind a group of 4 people and had to follow them the final 100 yards. The timing mat was 75 yards or so from the pool so I was happy with the actual swim performance. It went by so quick I can't believe I agonized over it so much when I started swimming in January! What would you do differently?: Seed myself a little higher and continue to work on form. Transition 1
Comments: I just got my bike and clipless pedals in January so I stopped off to the side of the mount line and took my time to get clipped in and going. I did not practice transitions physically, but obessessed about them in my head. Everything wnet according to plan. What would you do differently?: The most time was taken putting on my jersey and shoes. a Tri top would help and maybe tri shoes, but as far as the process I felt good about it. Bike
Comments: I did not drink anything because of a fear of my bike handling skills. I feel comfortable on the bike, but I have not practiced grabbing a bottle before. The ride was great - by far a personal best. My garmin said I got over 33 mph on a couple of the hills...followed by a low of 7mph a 1/4 mile later going up the next one! I felt good throughout and kept trying to push a little harder - still learning what I can do here. What would you do differently?: Ride more - I rode the trainer a couple days each week due to my time availability (5:30am only) and then longer rides outside on weekends. Keep pushing myself - it is fun to see what I am actually able to accomplish! Transition 2
Comments: Felt good about this. My family was there to see my dismount and run in - gave me a great boost and I still felt good. Everything went according to plan. What would you do differently?: Practice more. Run
Comments: Course had rolling hills, which is like the area I usually run, so I thought I did well. The only 5k I have run was Jan. 2011 and I ran a 10.10 pace so I was stocked to break 10 min/mile after swim and bikE! The course was an out and back, which allowed a lot of interaction with the athletes going the other direction - lots of "atta boys" going on. Great group of people. What would you do differently?: Practice bricks, drink and run more. Legs felt a little rubbery coming out of transition and I was worried about cramping as well. Post race
Warm down: I have 3 boys - 5, 2 and 2. They helped me warm down by running away from me so I had to chase them! Great pizza, GREAT weather, great people and family - can't beat it! What limited your ability to perform faster: 1 - My level of fitness - I have lost 40 lbs. since Aug. 2010, but have another 15 to go. Need to run and bike way more to be able to push harder. 2 - My lack of understanding of things I could practice that would make a difference - getting familiar and doing more tris. Event comments: The volunteers were extremely helpful and cheerful. Well run race. For me this was a challenging course on the bike and the run, which is what I was looking for. I went into it with a laid back attitude, which helped on the swim portion. I will do this race again - I had a blast! Thank you BT - couldn't have/wouldn't have done it without you! I ate cereal and OJ at home. This was my first tri so I drove to the venue and tried not to embarras myself too much! Took my bike to the Trysports tent to get the tires aired up. I set up transition the way I had rehearsed it in my head and then waited and tried not to get too nervous. Lots of cool and helpful people around to talk to and gave good pointers.
None. I wanted to watch the first swimmers go off and see how they passed and handled the ropes so I spent my time enjoying the swim and used my swim as my warm up.
