Pre-race routine:

Up at 4AM, had some coffee & bagels. Left a little after 5AM and arrived around 5:20A. Picked up my chip, got body marked, set up transition and then wandered around looking for people I know.
Event warmup:

Nothing for run or bike. Went down to the water around 7AM. Got used to the water, swam out to first turn buoy to check sighting. Water was 85 and the air temp was 61, so was freezing when I got out.
Swim
  • 17m 2s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

Based on my time, the course was likely a bit short; I've been swimming around 2:10 in my workouts and did a 1:56 pace today.
Start was in a chute; lined up in the center towards the back. Just jogged into the water and waded in until it was deep enough to swim. Focused on swimming my pace, and breathing well. Seemed to have other swimmers around me the entire way; some bumping, but nothing too bad. Held steady pace until I was approaching the last buoy, then picked up my tempo. Last leg back into the beach was straight into the sunrise, so couldn't see a thing; just stayed in the pack and followed the guys in around me.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much to complain about. Pretty much swam to my conditioning/fitness level. I noticed about 1/2 way that I wasn't finishing my pull, so tried to focus on that. Probably could have picked up the pace sooner at the end.
Transition 1
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Second race with my Giro Advantage 2 aero helmet; on without any problems. Long run/jog through transition to mount line.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe shoes on a bit quicker.
Bike
  • 52m 17s
  • 13 miles
  • 14.92 mile/hr
Comments:

I was just slow. Kept a good average cadence, but couldn't seem to push a gear. Was able to pick up to 17-18 mph for the last couple of miles, but otherwise just couldn't go.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

No probs.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 42m 30s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 13m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Trying to get my legs under me for the first 1/4 mile. Got into my run/walk schedule and actually felt better the further I went.
Left quad bothered my over the second half; was better when I shortened my stride a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep up my running volume and keep loosing weight.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a bottle of water and walked around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more TITS.

Event comments:

One of my favorite races. Beautiful weather. Missed it last year when I was still in my boot for my Achilles tendon, so feels good just to be out there.
