Pre-race routine:

Woke up early, showered and drove to the race site by 7:00. Got a great spot, good parking location, and had plenty of time to get ready. Ate breakfast in the car, had Bran flakes and a banana.
Event warmup:

Did normal stretching. After the tough practice swim on Tuesday of this week I was really worried about the race. However, yesterday (Saturday) I tried a new approach when I met up with others at Fish Lake Park. I got in the water and got acclimated to it before swimming. This made the swim very easy and I could get my face in the water and breath normally.
Swim
  • 36h 42m
  • 1640 yards
  • 2h 14m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim went great. I stayed to the outside took my time and focused on steady easy breathing. Right before the first turn I got ran over by a wave behind me. On the second leg I started to drift off course but quickly corrected. I don't think I lost too much time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - It was a great time.
Transition 1
  • 03m 18s
Comments:

The run from the lake to the bike was long. Everything went well getting on the bike. It was a bit disconcerting as I was one of the last ones out on the bike. This included the sprinters as well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 20m 14s
  • 25.5 miles
  • 19.07 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike felt great. It was fun doing a double loop course. And it was fun to do the Olympic distance which I was quite comfortable with.
What would you do differently?:

Train more to improve on speed and hill climbing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

No problems other then maybe a little bit of dread facing the 6.2 miles I have to run. But I felt great going into it.
Run
  • 1h 05m 11s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Start of the run before the hills was good. Due to the temperature getting quite warm and the sun beating down I got something to drink at every aid station. They had a lot of them which was good. When I got to the hill I had to walk up it. After that it was a walk \ run race back to the finish. The temp when I finished was around 74 but felt much warmer.
What would you do differently?:

Work on larger bricks and longer runs. Prior to this run I had only done 1 10K and a 6.75 mile run. I think if I had more miles under me it would have gone better. The bummer was that I passed a lot of people on the bike and by quite a bit, who ended up passing me back on the run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training.

Event comments:

I really enjoyed this race and hope to do it again next year.

Course: The course was a deviation from normal. It was a double loop for the Oly. where the Sprints had to do it only once. Once I got on the bike I again started passing people pretty good. With the olympic folks doing their second lap plus all the sprinters it was a crowed course. Felt a lot like the old bike racing days. I was very comfortable in the pack even on Hwy 55. Continued to pass people and get passed by some. The hills went well. The second lap was dead. What a different race. No groups, only spread out bikers. I played leap frog with a women for most of the second lap which was fun and a distraction due to the change in the number of bikes. It felt lonely out there. Flew into transition fast.

Course: Out and back run along the lake. BIG MISTAKE MADE - I did not run the course on the Running Maps. Based on the beginning of the course being flat I made an assumption that the whole course was flat. I did not realize the large hill at the end with the extra teaser right before the turn around. It surprised me so much that when I saw runners on it I first thought - wow there are a lot of people running on the same road we are. Then I realized they were part of the tri.
