Sunny
Total Time = 2h 18m 22s
Overall Rank = 320/3135
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 53/239
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 0500, banana and water. Walked over to transition to get marked and set-up. Headed back to the hotel to chill and get everything ready. 5 hour energy on the way out, peanut butter bagel thin and water.
Event warmup:

Headed over to the swim start at 0800. My wave was scheduled for 0830, ended up starting at 0840. Swam about 400 yards just to get used to the water. Stretched and waited.
Swim
  • 19m 5s
  • 1000 meters
  • 01m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started to inside of track about 3-4 rows back. Jogged out and started to swim at about waist deep. Was very concerned with keeping my heart rate down throughout. Could have gone out faster, but didn't want to get too tired or too amped up. Did a good job of swimming only as much as I needed to. Stayed to the inside of the course the entire way and hugged the buoys.
What would you do differently?:

In retrospect, could have gone a little harder. I probably would have gained maybe 1 minute total.
Transition 1
  • 04m 55s
Comments:

Had a great entry into my shoes. The best I've done to date. The run up the beach was about 0.5 miles. Took my time. Again, didn't want to get my heart rate up too high. Took my time in transition. Didn't want to set out on the bike having forgotten anything or in disarray.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster up the beach. Could have saved maybe 30 seconds there.
Bike
  • 1h 06m 33s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.40 mile/hr
Comments:

Not bad overall. May have had a little more push. Happy with my time overall. At about mile 18 I latched on to a guy who passed me and I stayed about 3 bike lengths behind...sometimes closer :)
Transition 2
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

There was a long stretch of dirt and gravel to run through so I decided to keep my shoes on and unclip. I was worried that going barefoot might ruin my run with sand and grit on my feet. Also, I decided to put on socks for the run, wasn't sure how my feet would react to a 10k barefoot.
What would you do differently?:

Want to get to the point (and shoe) where I can go barefoot.
Run
  • 45m 47s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Hot, hot, hot.
What would you do differently?:

Better preparation. Maybe hydrate better on the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, cold towel on neck, ice pack on neck. I was over heating!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Missing workouts the past few months. Unknown race distance. Unsure how to pace and what to expect.

Event comments:

I'll be back. Great venue. Would loved to swim the entire 1500, but all things considered it was a great race.

Kept heart rate right around high 140's 150-51. Wanted to stay in zone 3 but I was comfortable in low zone 4.
