Total Time = 1h 40m 34s
Overall Rank = 954/1027
Age Group = M 35-39
Age Group Rank = 80/85
Pre-race routine:

Walked down to transition. Set up my spot. I did like the previous year's transition on the mowed and short grass better than the trek to this year's parking lot.
Event warmup:

Did some stretching. Seemed more rushed this year, though I got to the race earlier.
Swim
  • 10m 37s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

After researching, I would say that I finished in the top 25% of my age group in the swim. This is my strongest leg, and I did fairly well with this I think.
What would you do differently?:

Calm down and go with the race.
Transition 1
  • 03m 45s
Comments:

This is my slow transition. I did not like the guy stopping everyone to undo their wetsuits. This just slowed me down really. I took my tie, caught my breath, put on socks and such and went off on the course
What would you do differently?:

Try to run past this guy
Bike
  • 37m 56s
  • 9 miles
  • 14.24 mile/hr
Comments:

BONK!!!! That is all I have to say, I bonked on the bike and felt awful. Took a gel, no help, took some Nuun, no help until later. Really, at about halfway through the ride, I started to feel much better. The bike course was shortened due to terrorist concerns on 9/11. Had to do the bridge 4 times and the railroad tracks the same amount. Very boring course this year, not like the previous year. Did not feel comfortable in aero.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure to take electrolytes and such before the race (week before and such)
Transition 2
  • 04m 4s
Comments:

Still recovering from bonktown. Did not feel great.
What would you do differently?:

See bike section
Run
  • 44m 12s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 14m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

Run sucked. I tried doing this whole natural running thing, and it has screwed me up more than anything else. Thought I would do better, but it has turned out to be worse in terms of my time. More run training is needed, but the week prior I had a gout flare up which made running very tough. My run, the same distance, a week later was 38 minutes. Still need to work on finding the hydration balance.
What would you do differently?:

Run more,
Post race
Warm down:

See my family, get my son some breakfast and walk around. The bands this year were not very good, and the Green Day cover band was awful. They hurt my ears.

Event comments:

This year was a tough race. Much of it was my fault and some lack of preparation. I will do the race again next year, as I consider this one of my "A" races, plus it is in San Diego and I get to get away.
