Pre-race routine:

slept pretty well for me, woke at 4:45, left house at 5:45. Arrive race site 6:15, in plenty of time to park and get set up
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 22m
  • 547 yards
  • 04m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

can't really comment much on ranking etc since "ALL SPORTS" used some kind of new (we could tell this because the equipment was pristine, not gnarly with lake water/stretched, etc,) timing system that was TOTALLY hosed. I normally don't wear a watch, but I'm glad I did just for a general guildeline. I wanted to finish under 2 hours and the only way to keep tabs was wearing my watch.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know what I would have done differently to prepare for wind gusts up to 30mph. You just put on the big girl pants and deal.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

again, no idea what the transition time was due to epic fail of ALL SPORTS timing....
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Bike
  • 51m
  • 14 miles
  • 16.47 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

I wouldn't ride any differently but if I had known the timing company wasn't up to the challenge I might have been more precise in my cyclometer reading
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

T2 time included a scramble up the dry, dirt, rutted side of the dam so I walked up there so as not to turn an ankle or knee. Timing mat was at the top of the hill
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 38m
  • 3 miles
  • 12m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

keeping cool! in 100 degree weather! ha! but I was acclimated.
What would you do differently?:

not sure there was any improvement to be made given the wind, heat and placement of aid stations
Post race
Event comments:

This is the first time I'm raced this particular 5th anniversary event -- I've enjoyed being a volunteer the prior 4 years but thought it might be good to race where I've been training. Nobody was prepared for the horrible windy conditions that early in the morning and I think about 25 or so bailed during the swim.

Course: wind data 18-25mph with gusts to 30. Swim totally sucked. I had to hold onto a lifeguard buoy at approx 100 yd and again at 200yd but once I got to turnaround buoy I was fine.It didn't help that there were supposed to be 3 min between waves, but somehow we (TriZones, 2nd wave) were either told to go or informally people took off about 1 min after the first wave. I was unprepared from the start and I'm not a strong swimmer. I tried to do 15 strokes without sighting but the first time I looked up, I was rather freaked out.

Course: course not bad, but the freaking wind by that time had whipped up white caps on the lake. I didn't put on my run cap till the 1 mile marker because I figured it would blow off. At one point, I felt like I was on a treadmill set for a 20 percent incline - I thought even walking would not be faster than running with that wind. Crawling, maybe............
