Swim
Comments: The pace for the swim reflects the run up the beach. I felt the swim overall wasn't too bad, but one of the other racers I expect to beat in the pool was over a minute faster than me on the first lap - so maybe it wasn't that good. Dropping a minute on the second lap was a bit disappointing too. Sighting this year was WAY better than last year. Hitting the markers and rounding was really good. Totally busted after the second lap so can't complain about the effort. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Gave it loads. Swim volume was down this year with no swimathon in April, but my speed is increasing with the club sessions. Should really have flooded the suit in the warm up, but the water was baltic. Transition 1
Comments: Busted so took my time - maybe too much time, but hindsight is a great thing. Had a bit of difficulty getting my first hand out of the wet suit so ran with it trapped for a bit - to the amusement of someone in the crowd. What would you do differently?: Not much. Bike
Comments: Really not done enough on the bike this year and it shows. Bad time getting shoes on - might have to rethink that. Noticed the timing chip was tight, but didn't take the opportunity to fix that on the move so had to stop on the run instead. Wore arm warmers, which I don't regret, but I lost a bit of time fiddling with them on the bike. Position was way better this year with the FF seat post and I love the Specialized saddle. No issues there at all. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty fast T2 by all accounts. Considering I stopped for socks What would you do differently?: Not much. 38/108 Run
Comments: Had to stop and sort the timing chip - I couldn't feel my right little toe. Instant relief after the adjustment. Pretty pleased with the pace - 7:35ish. Legs were uncomfortable after the ride - no bricks prior to the race (more bad prep). Settled down not too bad. Took a couple of guys in the first mile and a half. Another in the next 2, with one or two passing me. Couple of groups on the beach passed me. Tried to hold the second group and they lifted me. Held long enough to get one of the guys again just on the line, so there was a bit left in the tank. What would you do differently?: My achilles was bad for 5 months so the training I've done was good. I think I'll do much better next year if I can remain injury free. Post race
Warm down: Stood in the sea and cooled the legs. IT band on both sides started to tighten on the ride. Didn't affect the run till I stopped. I had trouble walking the day after for most of the day as a result What limited your ability to perform faster: Bike again is the big weakness. I don't see how I can get any better without putting in time on the bike I just don't have. Event comments: Weather was pants (not that I noticed) but that probably made it more comfortable - just not for the spectators. Last updated: 2011-05-07 12:00 AM

Reasonable night sleep this year. Porridge in a flask from 0700 was good.
Got there and had a 10 minute spin out the bike course with Alex. Bit of jogging and trying to stretch the tension out of my legs that had lingered since the 2 hour ride a fortnight earlier.
