Swim
Comments: 12:16 in water swim time (4:05/100yds). even though i think i finished last in the swim it was my best swim to date, either in a tri or in practice. the start was a little confusing. it wasn't clear when my time started. i think i may have lost a few seconds in the confusion. once i was i the water i dealt with my normal discombobulation for the first lap or two, but then hit a decent flow. i was surprised that i did such a good job on my time. i did not get into the water until i started the swim so started with dry goggles which worked fine. seems like when i get them wet in the pool and then put them on, they still have water in them which can get in my eyes. putting them on dry worked well. What would you do differently?: understand the start better and know that it was a 2 person per lane swim instead of a serpentine. they started us with the slowest 25 going first slowest to fastest. (like i said earlier, many lied about their swim times so they could start at the first and not have to wait another 2 or 3 hours to start.) i like the early start because i finish earlier instead of near the end. Transition 1
Comments: time is approximate since they combined the t1 and bike times. takes too much time to get into a sticky tshirt since in wet from the pool. wore headband which didn't take too much time to put on. wore bike sandals which were quick to put on. took time to re-pin on my bib. need number belt and either tri shirt or full tri suit, probably just the shirt. the 6 gallon bucket works great to sit on. no gloves, don't need them. What would you do differently?: keep it simple 1. head band 2. helmut 3. sandals 4. go Bike
Comments: 13.2 ave mph at turnaround. my longest ride of the year. my neck was killing from being in the aero position, kept aero for the most part. biggest problem was the last half, the easiest half, my crotch was burning so i kept having to stand up and give myself some relief. forgot to put tome chamois butter on, my right foot did not lock in, but didn't notice too much What would you do differently?: put on chamois butter, make sure shoes are locking in. just fill up the one jug and not both. too much water/gatorade Transition 2
Comments: approximate time since t2 and run were combined. seemed like a decent t2, did wear socks so i wouldn't get a blister Run
Comments: 11:30 for the first mile which i was real happy with. it was a good run for the end of a tri, but i felt myself wearing down as i progressed in the run. Post race
Event comments: IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT THE TIMING BY ALLSPORTCENTRAL DID NOT WORK WORK PROPERLY AND CONSEQUENTLY, OUR T1/BIKE AND T2/RUN TIMES WERE COMBINED. PART OF WHAT I PAY FOR IS ACCURATE TIMING THAT INCLUDES THE SPLITS. I LOWERED BY RACE RATING TO A 3 FROM A 4 DUE TO THIS. an enjoyable well organized race. appreciated letting the slow swimmers go first so that we didn't have to finish last. 1.5 hour drive to get there, don't need to be too early because the the transition area has assignments according to bib number. the 25 slowest swimmers start (although a number of these folks lie about their swim time so they can be one of the first starts since it takes a long time for everyone to start with 300 participants. if i got their by 8 or 8:15 am i would have been fine.
i woke up at 3:40 am and couldn't go back to sleep. i wasn't anxious the night before, but kept dreaming about the tri and finally woke up. it was a beautiful sunny morning, in the 40s when i left vermillion and in the 60s by the time i started the bike. i ate a bowl of cereal on the way. i hoped to eat an energy gel 45 minutes before the swim and then again 15 minutes before. i only ended up eating one at about 20 minutes before. i then had one 20 minutes into the bike and then one during the last part of the bike. the gels are easy to use.
