Swim
Comments: This was actually a pretty decent swim for me. I felt like I got into a rhythm and despite all of the bodies that needed to be passed it didn't detract from the speed all that much. Navigation was pretty good except when I tried to pass a not so straight backstroking chick that pushed me into the buoy rope. Other than that good to go. What would you do differently?: Train the swim like I did last year. Was 20 seconds or so slower this year, but I was pleased with that after the crappy swim I had 2 weeks ago Transition 1
Comments: This is always a long transition. I passed a lot of people running up the hill and through transition. That always makes me happy. Popped the wetsuit off, put the helmet on and grabbed the bike. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Should have been closer to 2 minutes. I'm sure there's something I'm forgetting to do (or not do)..... Bike
Comments: I usually love the bike portion of a race, just not on this particular course. It's just way too crowded, vehicular and bicycular (Yeah, I made up a word). I did not luck out with traffic this year. Just a couple miles into the "On your left"-fest I got stuck behind a truck. I waited impatiently for an opportunity to pass and after awhile I finally got a window to move past him. Unfortunately he sped up once I got alongside the driver's side mirror and I had to fall back behind him again. Seconds later he was going slower than me again. Finally a little while later he pulled over to let me pass. I made sure to yell out a loud sarcastic thank you as I passed. Pretty uneventful to palo but then coming back north I got stuck behind a van. Thankfully the frustration was short lived when the van turned. I continued on, wished I had put my 11-23 back on for the downhills. Eventually climbed back into the park, satisfied that I had a much better bike split than the race two weeks ago. I was only passed twice. What would you do differently?: Learn an easier way to pass cars on the course. Transition 2
Comments: I'm not sure if I pulled in too close to another girl at the dismount line, but she fell into my bike as she was dismounting. We both apologized to each other and I made sure she was okay before tearing into transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Sub 1 minute was the goal Run
Comments: I came out of transition feeling pretty good. Took a swallow of water from the aid station and dumped the rest on my head since it was pretty warm out already. I saw Melissa about a half mile in and was jealous that she was close to finishing. I was happy to hit the first aid station and know that there was only 2 miles left. At the turnaround I turned things up a notch and hoped I could hold on till the end. I've done virtually no speedwork this year because of injury so it was strange to push the body that hard, but it also felt good at the same time. I was happy to cross the finish line with a much better run split than 2 weeks ago as well What would you do differently?: Run consistently Post race
Warm down: Drank, walked, ate What limited your ability to perform faster: Limited training so far this year. I'm about a month, month and a half behind fitness-wise where I have been in years past. Event comments: I was pleased with the performance. It was a little redemption for the really crappy race I had 2 weeks ago. Things are heading in the right direction. I'm a little disappointed that I wasn't competitive enough to bring home a third piggy bank award, but at least Melissa got one by placing second in her age group Last updated: 2011-05-08 12:00 AM

We stayed in Cedar Rapids the night before so it was nice to get a little extra sleep. In years past I had driven in the morning before. We ate a little breakfast and headed out to the race site. Set up shop and waited at the beach for the party to start.
After I watched the elites go off and Melissa (mndymond) left to go wait for her wave to start I got in the water and swam a bit. I was in the 8th wave so I had plenty of time to get warm.
