![]() Swim
Comments: First OWS. I had built solid endurance in the pool, up to a slow 5k. Could do 13min 500meter in pool. Choppy cold bay was whole other world. Heard many experienced OWS say it was a tough swim, but I was overwhelmed. What would you do differently?: Fit my wetsuit better to avoid the tightness that led to my breathing struggle. Plant my face and just swim. When I did, I was fine. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: I'm not a speedy person, but a BOBOP Clydesdale. Transitioning from that swim, I was glad to not be vomiting, to be able to find my gear and leave the T area upright. What would you do differently?: Bring my Garmin 305! And water. ![]() Bike
Comments: Biking for less than a month, with fewer than 100 training miles, so just not having to stop and walk it was fine with me. Pulling 274 pounds plus bike up a hill was enough for me. What would you do differently?: Train more. Bring my Garmin 305. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: As I'm just trying to beat the clock, I am amazed I got out of the T2 as fast as I did. What would you do differently?: Run my bike. ![]() Run
Comments: I probably could have pushed it more, but I had to drive home 3 hours after the event, by myself, so just finishing under the buzzer was enough for me after my first OWS. Hearing the cheers along the way was awesome. I will wear my doughboy tshirt for this whole season. What would you do differently?: Run faster. Push to the limit when there's no more to save up for. ![]() Post race
Warm down: getting interviewed by Ann Wessling. Seeking cookies and burritos. Returning borrowed socks. Trying to remember where I parked. What limited your ability to perform faster: Carrying TWO HUNDRED AND SECENTY FOUR POUNDS. Not getting chances to practice OWS beforehand, especially choppy bay conditions. Event comments: Logistics of band placement needs tweaking, especially on bike route. Fun environment. People were awesome - athletes, volunteers, host personalities, all around. Drive too fast from aunt's house on Eastern Shore - almost miss entry to transition. Otherwise, none really.
Get in my wetsuit.
