Swim
Comments: Dear god it was horrible. My first open water swim, no wetsuit, mass start, I was in survival mode from the sound of the horn until I could finally stand up, which I tried to do about 10 times thinking the water would be shallow enough. I was bumped, swam over, grabbed, and freezing. Completely disoriented and miserable in T1. Boy it sure was fun though. What would you do differently?: Buy a wetsuit. Swim in said wetsuit in open water many times before event. Have somebody clobber me from a kayak while swimming like the Clif bar commercial. Transition 1
Comments: Perfectly planned with no delays. What would you do differently?: nothing Bike
Comments: Would have been better had I not went off the road after the steep decline with a sharper than 90 degree turn. Easily cost me at least a minute and I lost site of the guy I was pacing. Oh well, at least I didn't crash. Started raining hard on about mile 4. What would you do differently?: I felt really good on my bike, even if it is a 1988 Schwinn Prelude. I cant say that I would be any faster on a newer bike, but maybe. Transition 2
Comments: Consistent with T1 with the exact same time. What would you do differently?: nothing. Run
Comments: I was a bit dissappointed with my run. I just could not breathe for the first mile, which I ran in about 13 minutes. I just kept telling myself not to walk (one of my goals). I usually run this course averaging 7 min/mi. What would you do differently?: Practice more bricks. Post race
Warm down: Walk, stretch, walk, ate a banana, drank some gatorade, hugged my wife and kids. What limited your ability to perform faster: No wetsuit, no open water swim practice, not enough brick workouts. Event comments: This was my very first triathlon and the guys that put this on are an excellent group. One of the sponsors was the overall winner and after he finished his race, he jogged the run course backwards cheering on the rest of the field. I thought that was awesome. Nervous, nervous, nervous. Not much sleep at all. Ate a bowl of oatmeal, a banana, and a small glass of milk. Followed up with a large glass of water. Only live 1 mile from the park but I got there way early anyways.
Slowly jogged a 1/2 mile and gently stretched.
