Pre-race routine:

I live about 40 minutes from the site so alarm rang @430. Light breakfast of cereal and milk. I know milk ewwwwwwwwww, "cardinal sin". But it seems fine everytime so no changes today either. Chill with some sportscenter collecting my thoughts and visualizing the next couple of hours. Letting the mind go you really start to remember things you haven't packed. Had a friend joining me this morning whos considering joining the cult of triathlon. Warm-up shower. I always wake cold on race day, could be the mt.dew, and water-lol. Light home stretch to feel everything out. last minute check of gear, everyone in the car out the door.
Event warmup:

Had to pickup packet in transition, couldnt make the ONE DAY availibility. No biggie, volunteers were quick and had plenty of time after. Transition set-up was nice. GA multi always think it out. 7 bikes a rack I believe, maybe 8.
I got lucky-it was me and only 2 others on the bar. I took closest to isle, guy there before me took closest to end and 3rd guy spaced the middle.
Did a dry set-up and walked transition. Felt out the ins and outs then walked to the swim. Eyed it up, "ran" in walked through, and out, "biked in" motioned T2 and "ran out"
Changed into wetsuit-with a little help from the wife. and made my way down to the water.
Water didnt feel as bad as I thought. Friends did John tanner on saturday (a race I did last year) and last year the water felt COLD. Swam lightly to 1st buoy, did some drills on the way back to shore, one more trip to buoy a little quicker really stretching out and picking up any visual cues of the course. did a few speed bursts back to shore.

Comments:

Beachfront entry we were able to walk into about knee depth, upon "go" signal you could actually run about 5-10 steps and dolphin entry if you wanted. Im not a FOP swimmer but I usually start FOP wide. Had a nice start, maybe a little fast for me, I felt it at the turn. Leading up to the turn the orange and yellow buoys are great, especially for a short course. Made the 1st turn nice and tight, not alot of crowding or "fighting" 2nd stretch I really started to see the 1st wave BOP swimmers. The bridge is a great way to sight as well before yuo get to the orange buoy. Going throught the 2nd stretch I could really feel my arms getting heavy. Bad form, speed from 1st ~150, whatever. Turned 2nd yellow and saw ALOT of BOP 1st wave swimmers. Had to navigate a little to not swim over backfloaters. Nice float and flag banner at finish make sighting EASY. I really focused on sighting during breaths--sighting similar caps near me. Hard push finish, swam till I pulled dirt, jumped up and ran to T1.
What would you do differently?:

Ignore arms, or resolve arm issue. Training.
Consider more drafting options

If possible I usually want sub 1:00 for both T-zones. Not possible during My first/next triathlon (1/4 mile jog to T1). T1 was about 30 yds from beach, and I was about 1/2 way through transition. Suit came off fine except for one calf/heel-had to really stomp it out and thought-"oh dont cramp!" went to put on glasses-FOGGED OVER-into the teeth they go, helmet on and let's go with the bike (shoes rubberbanded in).
What would you do differently?:

Hmmm, more bodyglide?

Comments:

So I had a nice mount and worked the feet on shoes on pedals pretty well to start, got clear of the pack and slipped feet in, got caught by one person. Made my way up the 5 mile hill. At some point I began a pass on a rider, apparently I was also in the process of being passed. So were 3 abreast. I clearly had the guy on my right, and the guy on my left was making a move. We never came side by side but his front wheel was in sight. I voiced I knew he was there (voiced not yelled) as to not wreck by passing too wide myself, and if he could make the pass Id let him. I through this heard that great noise of a motorcycle-great. So I cleared my guy and the guy to my left fell back and was behind me, was he behind passed guy? I dont know-I DIDNT look back. but for a good mile I heard the motorcycle. It never passed me or paralled me. Rest of the race went on pretty empty. With about 4 miles to go I had a left outside calf cramp start. weird place for sure. the only way to stretch it was to try and "stand" on the outside edge of my foot-not really possible clipped in. So I got passed by a fellow rider (REALITY BIKES) who I dont know-nice encouragement thanks. I tried pushing thought but the last 4 really sucked for me.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to drink pedialyte or HTFU and quit whining.
Transition 2

Comments:

Feet are too big to let shoes dangle with run from dismount line to T2. Unclip, step over and run with bike shoes on. Found rack no prob, racked bike no prob, helmet off no prob. Shoes on-PROBLEM. I think my yankz are too tight. Its bad enough I cant really feel my feet or legs from the cold air. Finally on, gran belt and Im off!
What would you do differently?:

more powder/glide on shoes. The tightness felt GREAT on the run. so I dont wanna loosen the yankz

So from the bike I couldnt really feel my legs, good. The run to the bridge was nice and the flat bridge gave way to a nice view of the lake and a chance to really stretch it all out. the turn up the MASSIVE HILL-whoa!(if only I had a garmin on my pace would be DESTROYED here), Im kinda glad I couldnt feel my legs up this thing. The rest of the run is pretty uneventful. The nice thing is that its an out and back run so theres ALOT of support from other racers.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing-I have no idea how I ran the pace I ran. I started to question the distance, but GAmulti really puts on a good race so I doubt theyd mess us. Each mile was marked, long wraparound to the finish, more likely correct distance . If there were no markers Id worry.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around the back area, cheered on alot of racers coming in to the curl sprint finish, and talked with friends and other racers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heavy arms, cramp in left leg.

Event comments:

So the motorcycle...Im packing up in transition and Im approached by a guy, fellow Reality Bikes rider (see story from the bike section). He says to me "Hey I tried passing you earyl on going up the hill" and Im thinking ok you were the guy on my left. He says we all 3 got penalized by the official. I said when/why. He says the official rode with him and penalized him for not passing within 20 seconds. And he says he was penalizing you (me) for not passing within 20 seconds. ( I thought I passed within 20, but who really counts )And since we went 3 wide the 1st guy was given a position penalty for not dropping back once we both passed/passing him. I double checked the results and unless they added it in I didnt have one. He said well those arent the official times. So I waited around to see if my 2nd AG place would hold. Then the official results came out and I took 2nd. Listed below were the penalties by the officials. The 2 of them were penalized, not me. Sorry guys. And that explains the motorcycle.

Course: I rode this course about 2 weeks before so I knew there were about 2 hills to be aware of, other than that its pretty much all "rollers". The first 5 miles are about 2-3% uphill. You then get a nice downhill, a few rollers, then a hard DOWNHILL. I didnt have my speed working but I heard some people say after the race they got to 40. Last 3 miles are a rolling downhill.
