Pre-race routine:

Race started at 1:30. Such a late start made for a good night's sleep and a calm morning.
Event warmup:

Bike for a few miles over the beginning and end of the course, a little walking. Probably should have done a little swim and run, too.
Swim
  • 05m
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

I really don't understand why the organizers didn't line people up based on estimated swim times. It's not hard to do. I started a little forward of middle. Way too many slow swimmers starting at the front. I had to pass 8-10 people on the swim and I'm not a great swimmer. Occasionally there were 4 across a lane when 2 passes were happening in opposite directions. Sighting was good, so no collisions. Time was a little better than I was hoping for.
What would you do differently?:

Start closer to the front.
Transition 1
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

Wore a cotton shirt with sleeves instead of the tri top because it felt a little cold. Took a little extra to put that on. Still struggling to get a good smooth mount out of T1.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Could have worn the tri top in the pool. It didn't feel so cold after the first mile on the bike.
Bike
  • 28m 45s
  • 10.5 miles
  • 21.91 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt strong on the bike. Couldn't get the cadence sensor to work, so I have no idea how that went. Was the 3rd back from the bike. Did a good job holding back a little the last few miles to save something for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I've been thinking about doing a time trial or two to work on speed a little.
Transition 2
  • 00m 26s
Comments:

Had the second rack from the T entrance/exit. Good because the transition was like a cul-de-sac in that you left the same way you came in. Racked the bike and almost knocked over the stand, so lost a few seconds fixing that. Didn't take time to put on socks - first time in a race. That coupled with the yankz laces made it feel really fast.
What would you do differently?:

Be a little less aggressive with the bike rack.
Run
  • 21m 56s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good. Did a better job of setting a more challenging pace than I usually do. Negative splits for each mile.
Post race
Warm down:

A free sub and Tim Horton's coffee. Nice.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I have been training much more so far this year and I could really feel the benefits. Have been focusing on the Flying Pig Marathon until 2 weeks ago. Started some speed work since then, but ideally would do more leading up to a race like this.

Event comments:

Felt really happy with the results. Much faster than 2yrs ago. Made the goal time of 55:00 - 57:00. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the season. Feeling motivated to keep up the training!
A nice short and easy course for the first tri of the season. Had a great time. Could be a little better run -- Maps on website, start by est swim time, don't cross the bike/run course back on itself. But still a fun event. A really good first timer event.

Wind: Little
Course: Ground a little wet in spots, so extra breaking and a little slower at the turns. No real wind. Course is fairly flat with a few small inclines/declines. A lot different course than the last time I did this one 2 yrs ago when it was an HFP event. A lot more turns, more subdivision roads. There was a spot or two where it actually crossed back over itself so that riders would be crossing the same intersection perpendicular to each other. Very strange and a little dangerous. Later on the run, you again crossed that same intersection in front of riders. That reminds me -- I'm not sure why the current organizers (SpeedyFeet) don't have maps on their website. It would be nice to have a link to a google map or pdf...
