Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:30, took a shower, downed a bottle of ensure and a bowl of cereal, packed everything in to my car and headed over to the race site. Showed up to the race site super early, 6:30am for a 9am race start. I was the third bike in transition area. They chip sealed the parking lot where they have transition last summer and it is super rough to try and run on with bare feet. I put my bike at the very bottom of transition closest to the swim exit so I had the least distance to run on the rough gravel. One of my professors helps with the event and laid out some carpeting pretty much straight from the water to my bike, I literally had about 2 feet of uncovered gravel to walk on before my towel.
Event warmup:

Mostly just tried to stay dry and failed miserably. Did some light jogging and some dynamic stretching about an hour out from race start. Put on my wetsuit and listened to the pre race meeting and then headed down to the water for about 10 minutes of swim warm up.
Swim
  • 14m
  • 1640 yards
  • 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

I loved that it was a shorter swim than usual as that is typically my worst leg of the race. It was pretty congested for the first two buoys I think it would have thinned out a lot for the second loop if we had it. I did ok and felt like I was out of the water with quite a few strong people and wasn't to far back from the race leaders at that point.
What would you do differently?:

Try and stick on peoples feet a little bit more than I did. It was so congested you couldn't pass the slower people very easily. Maybe surge harder early on and hopefully avoid the slower packs at the start.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

I was so cold coming out of that water that it was a struggle to do much of anything. I put on a long sleeve jersey which was a good decision seeing as how cold the bike ride was.
What would you do differently?:

Having a dry towel in transition so that I could dry my arms off before trying to struggle with putting on the jersey over a wet body.
Bike
  • 1h 13m
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.42 mile/hr
Comments:

I pushed it pretty hard going out and passed several people. It felt really good but I guess I just eased off of it on the way back in or just struggled from the cold not sure which. I gave up about 6 places on the way back in and some considerable time. We had a pretty strong headwind for the last 6 or 7 miles so that made things difficult despite the downhill.
What would you do differently?:

Just work harder coming back in and spend more time on the bike in training.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

My feet were frozen, I just could not feel them at all. Fumbled around with my shoes and my jersey. Definitely could have been a little faster.
What would you do differently?:

Not a whole lot I could have done with the conditions the way they were it just made it tough to do anything fast.
Run
  • 39m
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Pushed it hard from the start and made up quite a few spots early on. I held it steady throughout and maintained around a 6:20 pace the whole time. Got some cramps about a half mile from the finish and had to just cruise it in to the finish line. I felt like I probably left about a minute or so out on the run course, but I was pretty pleased with my finish. One of my best 10K triathlon runs I have had.
What would you do differently?:

More fluids maybe on the bike maybe, although I had to pee really bad for most of the run so I don't know how much that would have helped. Maybe an electrolyte drink instead of just water. My powergel fell out of my jersey on the run so I didn't have that on the run which maybe would have helped me stay focused and not cramp up that last mile. Honestly though I wouldn't have made up any more places with where I was at.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and chatted with friends and parents. Ate a handful or pretzels and some bannanas. Got all my stuff out of transition and went and sat in my warm car till the banquet started and award ceremony

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The weather!

Event comments:

I love Onion Man! The race director and all the volunteers are awesome and even though the weather didn't fully cooperate it was still an outstanding day of racing.
