Pre-race routine:

Sam kids and I drove to Bristol VA on Thursday night after work. Then drove the rest of the way Friday morning. We went over to the park area on Friday to check in. Sam got in a long run and the kids played in the fountain and on the playground.

Saturday we met up with some of the other folks from the MG and did the practice swim, then later the kids adventure race. Sam and Drew were "Team Stormtroopoers" and Gabriella and I were "Team Princess and Unicorns". It was a lot of fun. One of the events we had to do jumping jacks, situps, pushups and frog leap. Gabriella tried to jump over me and just ended up landing on my back. I realized afterwards that they were video taping us, should be fun to watch.

Saturday night we had everyone over to our rental for italian dinner. Kids had great time playing around the house.

Last year there was some serious current and I had a 7ish minute PR. This year there didn't seem to be as much current but I thought I had a great swim.

There was a lot of congestion for some reason, I didn't have too many problems running into people but had lots that were grabbing at my feet. Rounding the turn buoy was pretty congested as was the whole way back once we started running into the previous waves.

After Rumpass I tried to hang pretty close to the buoy's, I guess I did a good job, one I actually turned to breathe and realized I was under the buoy.

Climbing up on the dock wasn't bad and I felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, this was a great swim for me.

Not sure what took me so long here. My suit did get stuck on my heels but still came off pretty quickly. On my way out there was a line of guys just walking and there was basically a chute out of transition so you couldn't pass people until you reached the road.

Ran past the mount line, and jumped on the bike and took off. Not sure why people insist on stopping at the mount line to get on their bikes.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get these dialed in more. Between T1 and T2 I could have gone from 14th to 10th. Lost 2 spots coming out of T1 started 21st, came out in 23rd.

I'm finding out I am not a big fan of the 40-44 AG, we seem to start later in the race and I end up having to weave my way through lots of other bikes.

Pretty congested for the first few miles until I made it to the top of the first big hill.

It was great having the 11-28 on the bike (plus all the time on the bike didn't hurt either) I was easily able to spin up all the hills, none were overly tough, never had to stand up and waste energy.

I really like this bike course except for the cars. I ended up having to slam on my brakes and come to a complete stop once due to a car turing left at the bottom of a hill.

Saw Chris (LeegoCrap) at the turn around and heard a loud pop then hiss, felt bad for him, it sounded like he had a complete blowout, turns out he tried to go on but went through a few tubes and they all crapped out also.

The new ending portion of the bike this year surprised me a bit, I had thought the hills were over once I got in town but they routed us through some on and off ramps of the highway, and it was pretty breezy so had to work a bit more than I thought of through there.


What would you do differently?:

Not much, felt like I rode this pretty hard, probably could have kept it a bit harder through that last section, should have tried to figure out where those last hills were. Started in 23rd, ended bike in 12th.

Should have been much faster here, not sure how it was even 2:08. When I got to the general area where I was racked someone had removed all the end-cap numbers so I went to 3 different racks to find mine.

When I did get there it was a war-zone stuff was thrown everywhere. I couldn't find my garmin and had to run without it. I did find it after the race it was 3 spots over...
What would you do differently?:

Pay more attention to where I am racked. Not sure how with that slow time but I started T2 in 12th and left in 11th.

Did this run blind since I couldn't find my garmin. It's a pretty flat course for the Oly, flat run along the water then a small bump and onto the bike path. Thought I was moving along well, could tell I wasn't running the same as I would for open 10k. Ended up watching the 3-4 guys pass me on the course, none were going super fast just fast enough to pass me and keep on going.

Need to work on running on non-fresh legs. Don't think it has anything to do with riding too hard. It would be the same if I went 15mph I think.
What would you do differently?:

argh, my achilles heel in triathlon, 45 seconds/mile slower than my open 10k times. I watched everyone in my AG pass me but couldn't respond. Need to be sub 7 pace here.
Post race
Warm down:

LOL, I screwed up the finish here. My kids were waiting at the finish chute. I guess they saw other kids finish with their parents and wanted to do that with me. Even Sam didn't know they were there.

I was surprised to see them and in my oxygen deprived state I didn't know whether to keep on running, pick them up, or run at their speed. I ended up doing a bit of all three. I'll be prepared next time and make sure to jog with them. They didn't notice and were very happy to be finishing with me but I felt bad that I missed a good opportunity to finish with my kids.

We stayed to watch Dave finish then had to pack up and head out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was very happy with my performance here, PR by a couple minutes in Oly distance race. Would have liked to go sub 2:30 and once I get my Tri-run down that will be easy to do.

Event comments:

Rev 3 puts on a great race. It's not perfect but still a great race. I like a lot of the things they do. Looking forward to seeing all the video and pictures that the Rev3 folks took.

This was also a SWBKRUN Mentor group meet up so that made it an even better race. Looking forward to the next one.
