Swim
Comments: First swim in my new Tyr Hurricane Cat 3 wetsuit. Felt good with less tightness in shoulders than my old suit. Started right in the middle, and had a fair amount of contact at the beginning, but things opened up after the first 100 yards or so. Got kicked in the mouth pretty good near the second turn buoy. I swam straight, navigated well, and felt strong at the end. A couple of minutes slower than last year, but I think last year was way short. Considering my lack of swim training, and this was my longest swim so far this year, I had an excellent swim. What would you do differently?: Swim more. Get there in time to get in the water. Transition 1
Comments: This transition takes a little extra time because you have to stick all your swim gear into a bag provided by the race so that they can transport it back to the main race site. Had a little trouble getting out of transition. A couple of guys sitting down taking off there wetsuits taking up the aisle. Had to lift my bike over them. C'mon, people! Still, this was way too slow. Had a much easier time getting my new wetsuit off my ankles. Nice! Bike
Comments: First race with my new disc cover from WheelBuilders, so I wanted to see how I would do. Since they put us old folks in the last wave again, there was a lot of traffic to navigate through. It was more difficult than last year. I actually reprimanded a couple of people which is totally out of character for me. Overall, I had a very good ride, pushed it hard, and felt strong throughout. Only 40 seconds better than last year, but I think the traffic held me back a bit. What would you do differently?: Pass more aggressively. Transition 2
Comments: Slow!!! What would you do differently?: Go faster. Run
Comments: Legs felt great getting off the bike, and was able to get right into a good pace. 2:40 faster than last year, so I am very pleased. What would you do differently?: Could have gone a little harder the last mile. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Don't train enough. Event comments: Good race for an excellent cause. Last updated: 2011-05-18 12:00 AM

Almost didn't do this race this year even though I really like it because last year there was a big problem with the swim. The tide was low which led to walking on a lot of sharp stuff and many people were injured, some badly. Signed up only when I found out tide would be high this year.
Up at 3:30 AM and on the road before 4. Only an hour and 15 minute drive, but a 6:30 start so it made for an early morning. Had a shake about 2 hours before the start.
Instead of regular body marking they had those temporary tattoo things. Didn't like it: took me too long, and I missed the regular ritual of a volunteer using a sharpie.
2 transition areas: T1 by the beach, and T2 about 2 miles from the beach, so after setting up T2, you have to ride your bike the 2 miles to T1, so warm up was that 2 mile ride.
Got to T1 later than I wanted because of the extra time putting on my numbers, so was not even able to get in the water before the start.
