Swim
Comments: My goal was to be steady on the swim. Remember, this is my first time, and I did not want to ruin the whole thing by panicking or losing my rhythm by getting out of breath. The water was surprisingly nice, it was warm and not as gross as I thought it might be. It felt so nice compared to pool water, actually, that I really enjoyed the swim. I did bump into a lady on the way to the first buoy, and one other time on the 3rd leg (different lady), but otherwise, I thought the sighting went pretty well. What would you do differently?: Practice siting more. I also want to just continue working on good form and strength, but overall I was very happy with the swim. Transition 1
Comments: My goal here in transition was to be calm and not get flustered. Considering that, it actually went pretty quickly. I gulped some water and a bit of fuel, because I am not good at drinking on the bike. What would you do differently?: Dry my feet off a little better. Bike
Comments: I started out breathing kind of heavily until my legs got warmed up. I pushed myself, but nothing too crazy, just enough to feel like a good, steady effort. Many people passed me, but seeing the time now, it was better than I expected. Overall, the road was good, but the section on Folly Road going out to the turnaround was awful. What would you do differently?: I really need to practice drinking on the bike. It's just too long to go without drinking. Just continue training and work on consistency. Transition 2
Comments: This one took a little longer than it should have because of switching shoes, drinking, fuelling and generally just spending too much time there. What would you do differently?: Fuel and drink on the bike! Run
Comments: This is where things got kind of ugly. I was just pooped from the ride, and it took me probably the whole first mile just to feel like my breathing was regulated. By then, of course, the heat just made me feel very tired. I really did not feel like I could have run it any faster. The last 1/2 mile was so hot, I could not wait to be done. What would you do differently?: Train better! Work on my overall condition. Post race
Warm down: Just walked around with the family, had a diet pepsi. What limited your ability to perform faster: Definitely losing steam at the run stage. Event comments: I can't really judge since it is my first, but I liked it and saw no problems. Oh, wait, the port-a-potties were frightful, but I guess you can't do anything much about that. It was a great race, and I will definitely do another one in this series. Last updated: 2011-05-21 12:00 AM

CSTS Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series

Overall Rank = 62/84
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 7/11
This is my first ever triathlon, so bear with me here.
I set my alarm for 4:30 so that I would have time to shower, eat and finish packing my things in the car. For breakfast, I had a peanut butter sandwich and coffee, then a banana and water in the car on the way over to the race site. I arrived at about 10 till 6, so I had time to pump up my tires and make my way over to the transition area. Still lots of time to pick a good spot, get my number and get marked, etc.
I didn't warm up at all, just took the time to talk to the people I already know from triathlon training and meet some new people, too.
