Got about six hours of sleep in the hotel - only woke up once and went right back to sleep (yes!). Drank Red Bull and ate granola bar at 5:00, then drank second Red Bull and ate PowerBar chews at 6:15.
Event warmup:

Warmed up for about 10 minutes, then waited another 10 minutes at start.

  • 13.19 miles
  • 09m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

My first six miles were right where I wanted them: a 9:02 pace, good intervals at 5:00 / 0:35, walked up a hill despite it being a run interval. Just felt strong. When we turned onto the out and back and I saw some of the hills, I worried that I was slowing down trying to conserve myself. Ran the downhills faster to try and make up time. I either walked too much or didn't run fast enough, and ended up with an overall 9:27 pace.
What would you do differently?:

In looking at my training, I didn't run Umstead or hilly courses enough. I won't make that mistake for Marine Corps, thanks to Galloway and living in the RDU area.
Need to do more tempo runs. I did the long run and the speed work, but need more of the midrange distances and paces.
Post race
Warm down:

walking walking walking - drank water, Gatorade, chocolate milk
ate BBQ sandwich and used my compression calf sleeves
wish I had compression thigh sleeves too

What limited your ability to perform faster:

that's what I'm not sure about

On one hand my previous PR was 2:18. This was an 8% improvement to get to 2:03:49. So it was a good race. But I feel I could have gone faster and broken 2:00.

Event comments:

outstanding organization, from the shuttle buses to the porta potties to the post-race events
