Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:00AM and went to friends house to carpool. I ate a powerbar and drank 2 bottles of water.
Event warmup:

Got to the transition area and drank another bottle of water. Hit the P/potty for my normal routine. Went again after I had set up the transition area. Guess I drank too much. Headed down to the start area and got in the water to make sure my goggles didn't leak. Went to the bathroom again in the water. Now I know I drank too much water.
Swim
  • 40m 22s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 05s / 100 meters
Comments:

Decent swim for me at the moment. Would have liked to be under 40 minutes. It was crowded in the beginning as usual but it got congested again as I rounded the second to last buoy.
What would you do differently?:

Need to join a master swim program. I would think this would be my strongest leg with my swim experience but I have been mediocre at best.
Transition 1
  • 04m 56s
Comments:

T1 went well for me.
What would you do differently?:

Once I get better at other legs I will practice getting into the shoes while they are attached to the bike. I am not there yet and need to spend more time practicing my swim, bike and run before I worry too much about speeding up my transitions.
Bike
  • 3h 23m 14s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Obsticle course in the beginning getting to the open road. Slow 1.5 miles got me off my desired pace. Climb
What would you do differently?:

I had a great ride if I didn't have to run after. Wish I didn't have to walk Stonehill but it was just too steep and I knew I needed to save something for the run. Legs were cramping the last 3 miles which proved I went too hard. Should have saved more for the run.
Transition 2
  • 03m 22s
Comments:

Had to use the porta potty which slowed my transition
What would you do differently?:

I guess I need to learn to pee on the bike. Or maybe not since 1 minute wasted in the porta potty is not with the smell and loss of dignity when I have a 7+ hour finish time.
Run
  • 3h 02m 40s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Just didn't have any gas left. Should have saved more from the bike but I am not sure how I could have done that. It's not like I raced up the hills on the bike. All I can say is my HR was too high for too long on the bike and then I had nothing left for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Next time I will train more on hills, practice my bike run brick with longer run and shorter bike portions. I was so worried for the bike that I over trained on the bike and under trained on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Laid down on blanket for 5 minutes and took in finishing my first HIM and such a hard course. Tried not to beat myself up so much for a crappy run and tried to stay positive that I finished. Also tried not to get too upset at a very hilly 14.2 mile run course.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to lose weight and train more consistently in all three disceplines.

Event comments:

It was a good race but too hard for my first HIM. Adding the extra mile was brutal. Overall, I think they did an excellent job given that it was the first race. I will do it again in the future if it is around for a while. Not sure if I will do it next year or the year after. I think I would rather do Vineman than this and I don't think I can swing both next year.

Course: Straight out, right turn at the buoy then head north for 1km. clockwise swim, then left turn into the beach. Just a little bit of kelp and murky water, but no chop and surf was small and easy to deal with. Good course. Buoys could have been larger, or more of them.

Course: Tough bike course with a slow start due to narrow road and several 90 degree turns. Easy ride to mile 18 or so. Then 3-6% grade to mile 28. Great ride down Ortega and then flat again. Killer hill on mile 56 and then back throughh the obsticle course to T2.

Course: Ridiculously hard course that was 14.2 not 13.1 miles long. Saying it was a rolling hills course would be a huge understatement. It was steep up and down over and over again. Not fun after a ride up Ortega highway and back.
