Pre-race routine:

Woke up at around 5:15 -ate a banana and cliff bar and had some water w/ berocca. Got to race site a little after 6 and set up transition area. When I went to put air in my front tire -the air wouldn't go in -strange-asked a couple of friends if I was doing something wrong and they said no -something was wrong with the tire. Let some air out and was then able to put air in it again (take one step back to take two steps forward).
Event warmup:

Put wetsuit on early for added warmth and jumped around a bit.
Swim
  • 16m 35s
  • 1760 yards
  • 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

First female out of water -only 25 sec back from overall first place (2nd overall)
Water was friggin freezing! Plus it was raining, windy and cold outside. First 5 min or so was about swimming fast just to warm up. Then fell in to a groove and cranked out a good swim. Wetsuit is great-I was flying, though noticed my arms felt heavier. Got some major chaffing on the back of my neck that I didn't notice until the last 200 yards or so. My watch was also pinching my skin under my wetsuit. Good exit out of water.
What would you do differently?:

Put more body glide on back of neck. Fix watch so it doesn't pinch before I start the race.
Transition 1
  • 02m 26s
Comments:

First time using the wetsuit so thought transition was pretty good considering. Longish run to transition area and was able to get suit down to hips and cap goggles off while running.
What would you do differently?:

Need to learn how to mount bike and clip into peddles faster.

Comments:

Flatted after only about 10 min :( Same wheel that I had problems with before the race. I was pissed since I had about a 1 min lead when I got the flat. Oh well. I might have tried to change the tire, but it was pouring with rain (flooded streets), windy (almost got blown ove and freezing -it would have taken me at least 20 min to change the darn thing so just rode bike slowly to the nearest checkpoint. I was able to get a ride back to transition from a volunteer police officer. I think a lot of people got flats -based on looking at the results -maybe from debris on the road from the storms we had overnight and the rain during the race? My swim friend who was second female out of the water flatted about 25 min after me (she also bagged the race, and was in 2nd place overall when she got the flat).
What would you do differently?:

don't get a flat ;)
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 00m
  • 6.21 miles

Post race
Warm down:

cheered people on after I stopped -sat in car with heat blazing to warm up and stay dry.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

flat tire

Event comments:

Would have been more enjoyable if the weather was better.
