Swim
Comments: Breathing was a bit tricky because of how stuffed up I was, but otherwise I felt pretty relaxed. On the way out my navigation was really good, but then on the way back I was all over the place. Just once I want to do a race with buoys to my right! Overall a solid time considering I wasn't trying to go too fast. What would you do differently?: Swim straight Transition 1
Comments: It was really raining hard when I got out of the water, and since I decided not to really race all out, I took my time here. The wetsuit came off really fast, much better than my last race, so that was nice. Bike
Comments: This was a pretty miserable ride because of the weather. I was freezing the whole time and the big descent that should have been really fun was really painful because of the rain. I signed up for this race because the bike course is known for its one big hill. I typically ride hills like this almost once a week, so it wasn't anything new for me, but it was definitely tough. I had taken it easy up until then and I decided since I came for the hill, I was going to go hard up it. I maintained great form, flying by people who were standing while pedaling away in my saddle. It was the only time I had fun on the bike. Feeling energized and competitive, I rode a little bit harder home than I did on the way out. Important note: I was able to eat 6 shot blocks and drink a good amount of my bottle on this ride. I've struggled every time with nutrition in Olympic distance races, and after Keuka a few weeks ago I made sure I was going to eat this time. What would you do differently?: Not much, I had fun on the climb and ended up with a good split even though I wasn't planning on really 'racing'. Transition 2
Comments: Didn't waste much time here, motivation from the crowd was great too. Run
Comments: This was actually my fastest 10K ever (although I've only done one stand alone and it was in the middle of marathon training, but still). I started out feeling really great for a change (nutrition anyone?) so I figured I would go out and try for a good time. I left T2 almost right at 2:00:00 so I thought if I could break 2:45:00 that would be pretty cool. I ran the first two miles around 7:10-7:20, and decided if I continued to feel good I would pick it up at the turn around. The volunteers out there were amazing, at one point there was a group of girls singing 'I Want It That Way' in the pouring rain (which of course got stuck in my head from that point on). I started putting in miles around 6:40 on the way back and still felt great. I finished with a smile and couldn't believe I just PRed the 10K. What would you do differently?: Nothing, great run Post race
Warm down: Immediately packed up my gear to get it out of the rain, did some minor stretching and showered in my room before checking out and grabbing some post race pizza. What limited your ability to perform faster: Being sick and deciding not to go all out from the beginning, but I think it was the right choice and allowed me to actually have a solid race and feel good while doing it. For the first time ever I am not putting lack of nutrition in this section for an Olympic. I had seriously considered never racing this distance again in the past because of how much I struggled to eat on the bike. Finally figuring out a good nutrition plan made all the difference on the run and I couldn't be happier. Event comments: Despite the weather this was a really good race. The bike course was challenging and fun, and its a really beautiful area. The volunteers and race organizers were top notch, I can't thank everyone enough for being out there in those conditions. The pre race dinner was a nice touch as well. I will probably be back next year. Last updated: 2011-06-01 12:00 AM

I have to say, having a motel room within 100 yards of transition was awesome. I woke up, brought my bike over to get the best possible rack position, then went back to the room to eat breakfast and get ready for the race.
I was still feeling sick and the weather looked like it was going to be terrible, so I decided to just take it relatively easy, make sure I ate on the bike, and just try not to suffer. I figured it was not like I was going to win anyway.
Never got a chance to ride the bike after I put new tires on (risky, I know), so I took it out for a 10 minute spin. Right before the start I hopped in the boat launch and swam a few strokes up to the ramp.
