Pre-race routine:

Day before, went to club med and hung out with friends. On the way out, met another triathlon couple and hit the bar. Uh oh!!! 6 drinks later, It's 9pm and I gotta eat dinner and go to bed. I was supposed to do an easy run and high cadence/low resistance spinning the day before the race! OH well.
Event warmup:

about 100m of warm up in the water. socialized.
Swim
  • 14m 27s
  • 437 yards
  • 03m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

So I'm an awful swimmer. I acutally was impressed with myself this race as I did not have to hang onto a lifeguard. Last race I had a panic attack and I believe I narrowed the cause down to swallowing water and lack of experience in open water. I wanted to finish this myself and without any lifeguard coming near me. I achieved my goal. No panic attack, I flipped on my back 2 times to catch my breath and I swam head out of water ugly freestyle.
Next race or practice I want to work on getting my head in the water and do breathing from the water. Baby steps!
By the way, theres not really anywhere to do an OWS in central florida. Its hot and humid causing bacterial and algae infestation and lots of alligators that do attack people and pets frequently. I am amazing in the pool and can pull off 1min10sec/100meter split for a 400m pool race. Open water is way different.
What would you do differently?:

Im going to make a few road trips to do some OWS, take it easy, and improve my progress in baby steps due to open water anxiety and I surely don't want to trigger an anxiety attack.
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Shoes fell off when coming out of transition. Didnt affect my t1 time but sure did on my bike time. I used the rubber band method and one of the bands fell off, shoe dragged along the road and unclicked itself.
Non wetsuit swim

Definatley a bad T1 time.
What would you do differently?:

Arrive earlier to the race. Didnt have time to set anything up really. I would have liked to set up the bike and helmet and everyhting better but I was being pushed out as they were closing transition setup
Bike
  • 32m 59s
  • 12 miles
  • 21.83 mile/hr
Comments:

Quads did not want to help me out in my race today. Totally sore, I probably from lack of spinning day prior and the 6 beers the night prior to the race.
On trainning rides I average 23mph.
What would you do differently?:

15 min easy spin day before. I was too busy having a good time drinking beers.
Transition 2
  • 00m 48s
Comments:

difficult time getting feet in shoes
What would you do differently?:

Got to the race a little late, I had 5 minutes to get everything ready before they closed transition.
Run
  • 29m 11s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Attempted to hit higher zones/paces but my quads would not allow me to do such a dashing thing. I held my awful pace and couldn't do anything about it.
Also in the last quarter mile I fell in a pot hole. I heard a crack as my ankle twisted, and I thought it would be a DNF right then and there. I took 45 seconds to recouperate and walked until I could see the finish line in which I did a hobbling-run. It must have looked quite funny.
What would you do differently?:

Well, I didnt have much time to improve upon anything as my last triathlon was 10 or so days prior to this one. Oh well, I'm doing them minimum one month apart from now on. They're just too fun!
Post race
Warm down:

Spending 15 min looking for a trainer or paramedics only to find out there are none on site. All I wanted was ice pack! I eventually found one of the volunteers to fill a trash bag with ice and I laid down and chilled out for 45 min. My ankle was hurting more and more as the ice was on it.

After about an hour of chilling out, collecting my gear, I went to the free breakfast buffet. Food wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but it was food and I ate it.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim anxiety
Lack of run training
Lost my shoes while mounting bike - rubber band method
No volunteer at a turn, I made a U turn following people coming out of a subdivision when I should have made a left into the subdivision. Cost me about 30 seconds.
Fell in pothole with 0.25mi to go. Got scrapes all over, ankle swollen up and hurts to put weight on

Event comments:

There were wayyyy too many elites and top notch triathletes for my liking :( I was totally shocked.

At least I walked away with a 1st place AG.

This was a terrible race for me and I felt terrible throughtout the entire event
