Pre-race routine:

The usual. Up at 6am. Ate a cliff bar, bannana, oj, and coffee. Wore my brand new BT tri gear. It fit great and was very comfortable. Headed to the race site in McKinney. Set up my transition area. Saw Emily (emilyindallas). Chated with her for a while. Then ran about a mile for a warmup.
Event warmup:

Any kind of warmup was pointless. My wave was scheduled to start at 8:25. The first wave was at 8:00. But, I ran and swam before the start anyway. I was out of the water about 7:45 and stood around until 8:25. Chatted with Emily, David (davidb), Andy (apw0397), & Aaron (jeepfleeb). Haley (comet) was already in the water.
Swim
  • 31m 30s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 06s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was my first open water swim this season. I always seem to have problems with the first 2 - 300 meters; I can't get my breathing right, my strokes are off. After about 500 meters these issues seem to work themselves out. I think these problems are due to not being warmed up. The same thing happens to me in the pool. The second loop around the course I was feeling pretty good. I was lengthening my stroke and my navigation was better.

One huge positive: bilateral breathing the whole race! I think this helped my navigation.
What would you do differently?:

Start out slower and warm up. Then pick up the pace.

I need a sleeveless wetsuit. I think the full is too restricting.
Transition 1
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

I kind of took my time because my HR spiked right up running to T1. My suit got stuck on my heels.
What would you do differently?:

Practice taking the wetsuit off.
Run
  • 58m 39s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Overall this was a decent run for me. I think I can run faster, just need more confidence in by ability. I held back on the first loop becuase my HR seemed too high. But in retrospect, I think I should have run harder from the start. No major issues; just a comfortable run.
What would you do differently?:

Run on RPE instead of HR. Maybe?
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and ate some fruit.

Aaron was helping the time keeper. We (Emily, Aaron, Haley, David, Andy) talked and watched the other athletes coming in. Aaron and Haley were talking about their next race adventure which was taking place later this afternoon. But I'm not giving it away...will have to wait for the RR. Then we took a group pic. Aaron took away some hardware; second in his AG. Andy and I decided to meet up later this afternoon for a bike ride.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more OW swim prcatice.

Event comments:

This was an OK race right in my back yard, so can't really complain. They didn't have chip timing, so the times are from my watch.
