Pre-race routine:

1/2 coffee and muffin. Hubby drove, got there in plenty of time.
Event warmup:

Swam a little. Kept whole body in the water for 10-15'. I think that helped me acclimatize to the water pressure, and towards the end I felt the wetsuit was not restricting my breathing, like I normally feel.

As the race director was giving info to the first wave, and I was warming up in the water, I overhead him saying sth about "timing chip". OMG... I forgot to get my timing chip. So I quickly ran out of water, towards transition, but wasn't able to get past the netting. I called out to one of the volunteers, who was kind enough to get the timing chip for me. Whoosh! How can I forget, I must have raced 100x. Good thing I'm the last wave.

Official time includes run up beach to transition.

Did not panic and was swimming MOP with the pack throughout, instead of waaaay back all by myself like I usually do. A VERY NICE refreshing change. 4 1/2 min faster than last yr! OK, so the swim last yr was 100m longer. Finding Freestyle program and swimming an extra day every wk for the last few months finally paid off.

Unfortunately, wetsuit stuck to my heels as usual. I actually lost my balance while fighting with the wetsuit, fell and almost caused the entire rack of bikes to fall like bowling pins. Fortunately, the bikes just shook a while and none fell.
What would you do differently?:

Wish I know how to get that wetsuit off without getting stuck. Lathering body glide never seems to work for me.

Garmin was not picking up cadence sensor for some reason. Passed a ton of people, probably over 100. Time includes a fairly long and hilly run on grass to the mount / dismount line. According to Garmin, bike was 38' for 20k, 31.6kph. That's 3 min faster than last yr.

Weather reported the wind was 18kph, but I didn't feel any.

Was in aero position throughout except cornering and going in and out of Conservation area. With the compact crank, I was able to stay in the big chainring throughout the race. The strange thing with this bike is that the pedal moves while I'm running with the bike, and I wasted a lot of time positioning it before figuring out it was doing that. Overall, however, I can say now I'm happy with my new Trek Speed Concept, the new Vittoria Open Corsa CX tires and latex tubes.

Ran quite hard, and ended up having to walk up hills and at a couple of water stations. About 2 min faster than last yr.

Event comments:

Everyone was happy that forecasted rain and thundershowers held off.

Over 10 min (>10%) faster than last yr, with ~4 1/2 min improvement coming from the swim. OK, so the swim was 100m longer last yr. Still I'm ecstatic I'm not waaaaay back in the swim like I usually am. So glad I'm finally seeing some improvement in the swim, and the frozen shoulder from 2yrs ago is clearly gone. 2nd AG is icing on the cake.

Endurance training for the half iron was key in me faster on all 3 disciplines this year.

Food from new series sponser - chocolate milk and Hero burgers. Yum Yum, athough the burger lineup was quite long later on.

I also really like the new timing co Sportstats. I now finally have meaningful overall placings by gender. I can also sort to find out where I place in my gender for each of S/B/R. 11/103 of all women in bike, I didn't realize how decent a cyclist I've become.

Once again, Multisport and John Salt put on awesome races. Overall, a great start for the 1st race of the season.
