Pre-race routine:

After doing some cold/rainy/miserable races last year I swore I would check the forecast before any race. I decided on Thursday night to do the race. Beautiful forecast. Went to a wedding the night before the race and had a great time. Beautiful wedding setting + good wine + fun family = bad race preparation. My husband, who was also doing the race, was much better behaved and it showed in his great performance.
Event warmup:

In the long walk from parking to transition I tripped over my bike (really?) screwed up my chain, derailer and scraped my foot. I thought this was going to be a bad omen to my first race of the year. So before warm up my first stop was a visit to the very nice bike repair volunteers who kindly fixed my bike with a smile. They assumed I dropped my bike unloading it from my car. I didn't have the heart to admit my clutziness before a race. Once my bike was fixed I rode a little with my husband. Also tested out my wet suit for the first time this year. The water felt great and I was happy that my wet suit was still as boyant as last year.
Swim
  • 10m 16s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

My swim is always pathetic and this race wasn't any different. The water was great; clear with no weeds. I know I had on a wet suit but it didn't seem that bad on my face and feet. The wind was minimal so the water wasn't choppy at all. There were a few bumps during the swim but nothing out of the ordinary. I have no excuse for a bad time. It's all on me.
What would you do differently?:

Train for the swim. Ok, I say this after every race but I still don't do it.
Transition 1
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

The transition is a straight shot out of the water and I found my stuff easily. Had a great spot right on the end. The only difficulty I had was getting one leg of my wet suit off. Other than that I can't imagine making this any faster. How can people do this so fast?
Bike

Comments:

The bike course is on bumpy, rural roads. The hills are soft and rolling, nothing too challenging. The pot holes and big bumps were well marked with bright orange spray paint. The speedometer on my bike wasn't working and I forgot my Garmin so I did this ride on how I was feeling. The bike is where I ususally pick up my slack from my usual pathetic swim but I wasn't passing as many racers as I usually do. I was thinking that I must be having a terrible bike, since I didn't have any speed indication. But I was feeling good, no cramping and was relaxed on the bike. Now that the race is over and I saw my time I am pretty happy with it. There are really good bikers in this race.
What would you do differently?:

Convince my husband that I need a speed bike like his.
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

Nothing memorable here. Got off bike, took off bike gear, added run gear and off I went.
Run
  • 23m 27s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

This is a really nice run course. It is shaded, flat and on a soft surface - as good as it gets. I usually do pretty well on the run which makes up for my terrible swim time and here I didn't disappoint. I felt relaxed with energy to run. Even without my Garmin I knew I was having a good run. The only challenge was that the run course is narrow so I had to time when I passed other runners.
What would you do differently?:

I was still thinking about my terrible bike and probably didn't push myself as much as I could have.
Post race
Event comments:

I've never done this race before and overall I thought it was very well run. They seemed to have plenty of very nice and enthusiastic volunteers and organizers. The weather was beautiful which always helps to make race day more enjoyable. I'm glad I signed up even though it was last minute. I'm wondering if there were a smaller number of athletes this year. I thought this race would have been bigger. It is a long walk from parking to transition which I normally wouldn't mention but since this is where I tripped over my bike while I was walking to transition I thought I would mention it.
