Swim
  • 1h 38m 14s
  • 4224 yards
  • 02m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was crowded. Lots of contact. It was very difficult to swim very long without contact. This continued throughout the swim. The canal portion was longer than anticipated. I had not made landmark references to distance to transition area. Rounding the bouys seemed had almost no contact at all.
What would you do differently?:

I would have worn a wetsuit and took the 10min delay start. I am not sure I would have overheated in the wetsuit. However the others that did this commented that they caught us stragglers and had trouble once they reached us. However there times were about 20 min faster overall.
Transition 1
  • 07m 59s
Comments:

I had no wetsuit to remove and I ran in my shoes and clip in fast. The biggest annoyance was the grass on my feet. Everything went very smooth. I was not rushing for time. I wanted to make sure I got everything I needed. Small confusion on where to but my transition bag. No bags allowed by bikes.
What would you do differently?:

organize my bag better. I had more things in the bag than I needed or took. But it was calming to know I had lip balm etc.. I put it on and put it back in the bag.
Bike
  • 6h 11m 58s
  • 112 miles
  • 18.07 mile/hr
Comments:

Followed my nutrition plan for the first 4 hours. I was not hungry for the last 2. I was moving very fast for the first 60 miles (3 hrs 5 min). I was concerned I was going to fast. But my HR and cadence said otherwise. My hamstrings needed to be stretched occationally. The sun really got to me around mile 90. No real problems with the time on the bike. My butt was not sore. However my Computer stopped working properly after it was hit with a water bottle at an aid station. My milage was off and it was difficult at the end to judge how far I had to go. the milage was marked on the road in 10 mile increments. the last 10 was the toughest to gage because it had changed 2 days before the race. I slowed down around mile 70 to 100 I felt light headed and dehydrated the sun was getting to me. If it was cooler I problably could have kept the pace from the 1st half (but at what expense?)
What would you do differently?:

think about what i can do differently for my nutrition plan. Carry real food (I was not in the mood to eat my bagel from my special needs bag) BTW GREAT IDEA FOR THE SUN BLOCK IN THE BAG!! I think that saved me from worse problems with the sun.
Transition 2
  • 12m 5s
Comments:

I walked with my bike until the helpers took it. I did not rack it. I wore the biking shoes an took them off while I walked. My entire change time was about 2 min. I went to the bathroom. Then I sat in the medical tent for about 5-7 mins with Ice cooling down before my run.
What would you do differently?:

where more sunblock. Maybe wear white for find things that would protect me from the sun to reduce the overheating.
Run
  • 5h 14m 35s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 12m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

I had a new I ran inbetween each aid station then I walked it geting water and some fruit. I took my salt pills and eventually I felt good to run. This lasted through the shade sections. Then I skipped aidstation for food and water I paid for it in the sun sections and walked again on lap 2. For lap three the sun was comming down but i still felt sick. I walk for about 2.5 miles then I puked and ran the last 5 to finish the race.
What would you do differently?:

solve the nutrition equation and get heat conditioning prior to race. Not I think the run would have been alot different if i was not feeling on each lap.
Post race
Warm down:

streched and ate

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutrition and Heat. Got a little behind on food (not salt) I was able to recover on the run with the run walk strategy for each aid staion. However it seemed only to provide small windows of improvement and then I would go back to fealing sick.

Event comments:

I really enjoyed the race and my performance. Nothing to be ashamed of. I think IRONMAN put on a excellent race. The swim was tough but that is to be expected over 2200 people in a narrow lake and canal. The bike course was really easy. The run couse was nice (maybe 2 loops next time)

I would do this event again
